 Hi ,

I have a problem, my fuel pump has gone. AA guy confirmed this. But where is the pump on my 03 TD4?? Is it under the rear wheel arch or in the tank?? Had a look at the unit in the tank and there is only two wires to this?? That must be the wires for the sender im guessing and the pump must be under the O/S rear wheel arch??

Can one of you please confirm this for me based on the year i have??

thanks in advance

Hi, the fuel pump & filter is under the o/s/r wheel arch, do a search and you will find lots of info about how to replace them.:amen:

Hi. Quickest way to confirm is to open the bonnet and look at the inner wing on passenger side below the fuse box (i.e between the battery and the bulkhead) earlier versions had the low pressure pump and fuel filter mounted together just there. If there is not much there then you can safely assume that your fuel pump is under the drivers side wheel-arch behind the plastic liner. Hope this helps. D..

Can somebody point me in the right direction. I have an 03 Freelander and having had similar starting problems then when running has gone into safe mode it is a pain.

AA man called out to start after failing to start one day, gave the pump i presume under the car just by the axle a bang with a hammer, hey ho it started. I got away with this action for a few months but now has given up the ghost. Is it the pump in wheel arech or tank? Garages are just trying to flog me new valves ect etc,

All TD4s have TWO low pressure fuel pumps.
The primary pump is located in the tank.
The secondary pump is either under the bonnet LH side) for models up to 2002 and under the car inside the RH wheel arch for later models.
The tank pump can be heard working if the rear seat is lifted. The secondary pump can best be heard if the two fasteners holding the rear wheel arch plastic sheild are removed and it is bent outwards to give access to the pump.
The engine has a low pressure fuel sensor fitted which prevents it running to protect the HP (injection) pump from damage in the event of low pressure.
Has the fuel filter been changed regularly?

Are you sure???

aah yes it appears so, i'm sure i read on here somewhere that some only had the one under the arch, anyway intank pumps for all years of td4s for sale on ebay so that clears that up.:)

to quote the mighty haynes manual:

"Only diesel vehicles fitted with the td4 engine up to 2003 model year have a fuel tank mounted pump."

"Only diesel vehicles fitted with the td4 engine from 2003 model year have a wheel arch mounted pump"

Manual No. 3929, Section 4B.8 Fuel Pump Unit - removal and refitting

That's what I was led to believe OP. What do you make of these then?

freelander intank fuel pump, Cars, Parts Vehicles items at low prices on eBay.co.uk

It doesn't seem logical to fit two pumps close to the tank anyhow.

its a bit odd. I've used duckworths a few times, and they seem to know their onions. They have different part numbers, but look like the same part photographed from different angles.

Yes I am sure

See Rave 'Fuel System Description' and hands-on fitting new secondary LP pump. Moving the secondary pump to the rear caused a lot of confuion.

NOT TRUE, I have a 53 plate 2004 TD4 & it only has the one low pressure pump in the o/s/r wheel arch, no pump in the fuel tank.:bolt:

52 plate 2002 model - one pump only, in rear wheel arch. Took tank unit out thinking pump in there had failed - no pump only pipes and sender unit.

Chris.

Hi, Further to all this, my 03 TD4 has a pump and filter by the driver's side rear wheel. I don't know if there is another pump in the fuel tank as have not yet checked. Why 2 pumps anyway? Can this / these pumps go lazy and give temporary power loss on long fast hills or do they generaly fail completely? I ask because I am beginning to suffer this power loss problem. The vehicle always starts OK and is fine until this problem occurs and is OK afterwards until the next time. Thanks.

How about taking chassis number to a main dealer parts department and ask for info on this? Don't try today! Happy Easter everyone, pity about the weather.
