That’s what l told myself four months ago when l bought my missus a 90 XS TD5.
It did look a minter with almost no bodywork issues apart from a little on the rear panel, a bit too much driveline shunt, and issues starting when hot.

So, what have l done so far on the Landy?

Rear resprayed and new rear door (“we can’t repair it” said the body shop)
Rear driveshafts and all 4 drive members
Front and rear diff oil seals
New battery
New starter
Injector seals
Diesel filter housing
Alternator
Slave cylinder
New clutch and flywheel (“the flywheel is knackered” they said)
Steering damper
Rear discs and pads
Aircon condenser and fan unit
Alarm BBUS sounder
Wiper column stalk
Headlights switch
Swivel preload

Oh, and
Two new front seats
Front bumper
Side repeaters
Replacement stereo and rear speakers
A pillar trims
Drivers front carpet
Battery compartment cover

The good things?
Apart from the rear door the bodywork is pristine
Chassis is very good indeed, crossmember perfect
Been Dinitrol’d in the past
Interior very clean with no marks or damage
Five new tyres
Drives great, well it does now.
Everything works including the heated screen and seats

Tbh even a good one is a bag of carp compared to just about any modern car you care to think about.
Though yours is 15 yrs old and not many normal cars make it to that age.

I like my land rovers but they can be hard work at times and most non l/r people would jump ship after the 2nd or 3rd repair bill.
Its the only make of car I have owned and I will not and cannot recommend to anyone as I know there will be comeback!

Most modern cars service/mot annually and thats pretty much it.

Totally agree, which is why I've just sold mine and bought one of these:D

It'd only got .6 of a mile on the clock and truly needs nothing doing, it's even saving me 60 quid a month on fuel

720 quid saving a year well worth having, add in the tax savings to and pretty much zero repair costs for a few years and you can see whay people go new/nearly new.

I go nearly new, although we did buy a new Citroen C1 on a deal similar to Marmaduke's back in 2014. In the process of buying a Ford Focus Estate 1.5Tdci. Registered in Feb 2018, but on a 17 plate. 7,900 miles and they (Ford main dealer) wanted £14,570 for it. I offered £13,500 and they took it. Should have offered less  Still, a decent price I reckon so I'm happy. It's an ST-Line spec with a navigation system.

Toyota Aygo, zero deposit 159 quid a month for 4 years interest free and either pay 4 grand or give it back.....

Thats pretty damned good, 159 quid for a new car, basically 40 quid a week, under 3 hrs work after tax for most skilled manual workers and all you have to do is fuel it up and maybe wash it once a year.

As above.
We sold my missus’s last Defender in early 2018 and bought a brand new VW Up.
The bills went down, of course they did, the Up was doing 50+mpg and was costing nothing apart from fuel.
We kept the VW for a year, but my missus still missed her Landy so we sold it (fortunately we didn’t lose much) and bought a 90 XS TD5.

Five months later and she loves her Defender, despite the fact that it’s costing twice as much in fuel plus other bills.
