£200 for a new key fob???

Hi all, bought my Freelander 6 weeks ago, but alas it only has 1 key fob! I (sensibly) decided to look into getting a new one, so I went to Land Rover Chipperfield and was told it will cost £200?! I was expecting it to cost £100...Is there an alternative?

I lost my Alfa keyfob in Dec '09 (sledging with the kids) and as it was my only key I had no choice in getting a replacement.

Dealers quoted £180+vat, but managed to get it for £130 inc VAT from an independant Alfa garage.

Just phone a few indepedants - not all can do key fobs, but a few might be able to. Best look locally though as they'll need to program it.

I am getting a new key fob for my Defender next Saturday from an independent Land Rover specialist for £40 including programming it into the computer.

Any independant with the right diagnostics should be able to program, or better yet, an auto locksmith should be able to cut and program for about £40 (last time i used one for an audi key)

Can the key in the previous post be used on a 52 reg freelander or do you have to have separate key and fob. I need another set to lol.

Wow thats a bargain, i don't suppose you'd like to share who it is, I'd like to order one too

I needed another fob for my MGF (same as the Freelander type) and found a local auto electrician who sold me a new fob for around £35 and charged me £30 to program it to the car.

Dont buy one off fleabay !!!!!
There are major scammers selling keyfobs on ebay. The *****rs sell you a fob that transmits to another fob. So after selling you a cheap fob they wait a few weeks/months then pop round to your address they got when selling to you. Then they stand outside your house and click there fob code grabber thingy and hey presto they get in your car. You wake up next morning to find an empty drive. :doh:
Also some of fobs cannot be reprogrammed so you end up wasting your money. Go to a dealer and have it done properly !

If you do buy from fleabay get someone else to buy it for you from a different address.

I am getting the fob from Brooklyn 4x4 in Southampton - for which they are charging £40 and they said it will take them 5 minutes to program it to the computer.

I was after a key for my 03 Td4 but after many phone calls & treks to guys who were sure they could do it, when I turned up & they scanned it, their computer said dealer only.

I need a new one and live near you spill the beans which dealer please Whoops sorry just read where

my dealer quoted £102+vat for key and £40ish+vat for remote fob...and then wants £30 to program!! even though I told them the key is ordered to the chassis number and doesn't need programming if I didn't want the fob they still wanted to charge the extra £30!! robbing turds!
