I have decided i don't have the space/time/skill to remove and rebuild by discos 3.9 v8 , i have found a engine re manufactures fairly close to me, spoke to the guy this morning sounded good over the phone very helpful and knows what he was on about. So my first question was what do i get for my money?
rebour
Crank ground
New pistons rings etc
Cam tappets lifters etc
Valves
All expendables replaced
5 year guarantee or 100k miles
And says should take about a week

I am thinking about this as when looked at parts craddocks rebuild kit was £1000 plus i would need engine hoist and stand i know these can be rented but i my work wont come with a 100k warranty ;) just wanted your lots opinion to me sounds like a fair price, cant afford it before christmas but maybe in next few months if i decided to go ahead

If you want to know what you get for your money shouldnt you ask the guy thats going to do the job, and doubt he will know exactly until its stripped down. Bummer its a big expence just before xmas.

**** that's a lot of cash dude :(

Can't agree I'm afraid, just seems a waste.

There was a BRAND NEW 4.6 long motor on eBay for £1500 not too long ago.

Just seems crazy money, but it's yours at the end of the day mate. That warranty sounds nice but a little unrealistic!
Surely can't be guaranteed problem free for 100k miles?!

Ok so there's easy 500 quid in parts, probably approaching 600 tbh, so if its around a grand to do the job then yes it's quite fair, im not saying the engineer is overcharging at all, just that it seems awful to have to spend so much on a car which gains its reputation for being very simple for the home mechanic.

Do you even feel confident in removing an engine yourself?

I admit I found the engine removal/refit more difficult than doing the work once the engine was out, so it's not easy in any way but doesn't require the technical knowledge and skill of the actual engineering work.

On that basis also you could pick up another engine somewhere and save yourself some money short term. Hell it may even save you money long term.

Just passing ideas around, I mean if we look at it sensibly, 1680 quid on the road for a new engine is really not that bad at all.

Recently a pal of ours had a new engine in his 2006 M5, they have a common injector faults which leans out and melts stuff, and those motors cost 22 grand!

Just a camshaft kit plus the bits can be £1000 fitted, so with a rebore with pistons and rings, crank shells plus valves and springs and including labour £1680 I think doesn't look so bad.

thats what i was thinking when i got quoted or cam by a few localer LR garages, I'm just debating the idea of selling mine and getting newer (TD5) or d2 v8 , but dont think i would get anything as nice nick as mine for the £1600 plus sale of mine, im heading towards the rebuild , hopefully get a nice bonus in march so that could be new engine :D

Many years ago I had a recon four cylinder engine fitted in a car I had, that was after spending a weekend removing the pistons and replacing the rings to try and stop the oil burning, it did for a month.... so I had the recon fitted and it and it gave me a new car 'so to speak' well it would as it's the heart of the car.

Tippler Engineering in the Old Kent Road for us Londoners... they were the days.

Thats what im worried about me touching it and a month down the line having a RV8 coffee table lol

Right i have decided this is a Hugh amount of £ ha , gonna for some engine cleaner, then tappet treatment in next oil, planning to do next week, and if that doesn't solve it think it will be a tappet and or cam job after having a LPG genius over to check over my system , my system is StarGas which he said is practically impossible to get the software for, after i have resolved the tapping i am considering a multipoint to solve my misfire under load and god awful mpg with the poorly programmed star gas :)

i recently had my 3.5 carb done, crank regrounded etc, piston rings and all that and the engines swapped round cause i had a new engine to go in but wanted it reconning and that was 1200 but paid cash should of been 1400-1500 after vat but no where near as much garantee i think its a good deal

I bought my D2 3.9V8 es 8 months ago for £1700
Its got 66k miles on it and is in excellent condition
very clean and tidy

James martin has just fully rebuilt a 200tdi engine for me at a very reasonable price.
send him a pm, he really knows his stuff, and has done a cracking job for me
