starter inhibitor switch problem

I have a 2000 Discovery TD5 Diesel and without warning the check engine light and the green Sports and Manual warning lights started flashing. I did not have any accelerator and the car limped along in limp mode.

By vigouressly moving the auto gear lever backwards and forwards with the car stopped and engine switched off, I was able to temporarily drive the car. However, several times the car reverted back to limp mode and I had to go to the method of moving the gear lever to resume normal drive.

The starter inhibitor switch appears to be the problem. Is there any way of repairing the switch or am I faced with replacing the switch ($500)?

$500 for a switch?! Is it made of platinum ? What about local scrapyards?

It's not the switch cost probably, it's the labour.

The starter is controlled through the BCU, which takes a sense lead from the neutral switch on the auto box selector. So, you could have the neutral switch faulty (most likely) or out of adjustment or the BCU unit, or a connection to it, faulty.

What is known as the WXYZ switch controls all of the signals to the rest of the car. This switch is also known to fail, and is probably the one that needs sorting. As it is on the side of the box, it is not a quickie to replace.

Thanks for the replies. The switch costs $458 + GST (45.80)$505.80 Australian plus fitting (about 30 minutes according to my local Land Rover repairer). Hence it becomes very expensive to replace. Do you know if these switches are repairable? Thanks and all the best.

Hi Peter I'm a new member I have a similar problem! I have power but my range rover won't turn over I can start it with a wire from the positive battery terminal to starter solenoid. I have no warning lights! Would this be the starter inhibitor switch it only happened after using my eas buddy as I have a dodgy height sensor. Any advice much appreciated dee.
