Normally the 12v is to keep the fridge cold whilst towing, as it pulls about 8A, it wouldn't take long to flatten a battery. I have left the gas on when we have taken ours on the boat abroad (Naughty, yes..but gotta keep the rashers and beer cold) and the boat is not always level!! Put it on 240V with the selector switch to the "Lightening" position and the thermostat to the highest position. I've left the caravan parked up for over 12 months and have never had to take the fridge out and tip it upside down, unheard of!!!
The fridge on mains should be cold in about 3-4hours..just remember it's not so quick to go cold as your fridge at home. Is there juice getting to it, most have a indicator light built in to the mains and 12V switches.

Turning the fridge upside down used to be an old trick at sea after a period of rough weather. This was (quite) a few years ago mind! It most definitely did used to work though that was on compressor type fridges. As caravan are heat only type I'm not sure whether it would be the same. Any refrigeration engineers out there?

Gavbriggs, Your original post said that the toilet wont flush.I had the same problem when i bought mine. To start with , although the cassette toilet has a seperate water tank , I found that i had to have the main water pump in a tank of water to open the electric circuit to the electric flush . I then found that a small fuse on the thetford cassette system which was accessed from the outside door after removing the cassette , was blown. After replacing that , i removed the pump from out of the toilet roll holder (pull the holder out , one screw to remove ) and found that the impeller, accessed at the hole in the bottom , was seized ! I sprayed wd40 and with the aid of a screwdriver worked the impeller back and forward until it freed off . I then tried it again on the push button and all was okay ! Hope this helps.

you are right with all you have said but use cooking oil and not wd40 on the pump to lubricate it.

As for the taps. When you first connect the pump up it should run non stop for a couple of mins. This is normal. It has to fill up the heater tank. If it continues running after this then open and close the taps one by one. you should be able to hear the micro switches click on and then off when operating the taps. Mine has the same fault as yours at the moment cos my regulator is fooked. I've bought a new pump that comes with regulator but haven't got around to fitting it yet.

Just a thort, turn the fridge on 240v, turn the control down to 0 till it clicks then back up to full

the tap needs a new microswitch but for now i have disabled that one and turning another tap a fraction starts the pump.

the toilet requires a new pump, they are a tenner so i will be replaceing it shortly!! strangely the instructions from thetford are to cut the wire and replace the pump that way!!!

will see how it goes when new pump ariives, must remember to order it!!

The instructions from Thetford are correct - you'd never thread the cable to the switch. I think the top of the unit was put on after everything else was installed. Either solder and heatshrink or a terminal block with plenty of 'stuff' to stop it corroding.
Happy caravanning. I did it for twentyfive years and enjoyed every minute - well nearly anyway! Got old/idle now and got a static up in V8kenny land.

Why do they always have a bucket of ****e on the top table at a Knac*er wedding reception?.......to keep the flies off the bride !!!
