Go for diesel, reliable engine, no slipped liners, economical, 25mpg to 30mpg on the motorway, if it's chipped it's reasonably quick with loads of torque:D:D:D

Don't be scared of petrol, especially if it's got a sequential LPG conversion.
Not all V8s get slipped liner/porous block problems, but the 4.0/4.6 have gained a certain notoriety for these faults.
Why not see if you can find one that has had a fairly recent new replacement engine (with documentation to prove it), they are out there if you look hard enough.
Above all, take your time, check everything works and make sure you have a long test drive so any faults show up.

Then look at all the threads about the blown heads on the diesel, oh, and the hot starting fault, oh, and the cold starting fault, oh, and the lack of power and refinement..... need I go on. £5k will get you a late model Vogue ( not a poverty spec DSE) that has already got a multipoint LPG conversion. I get the equivilent of 38 mpg on a run with all the power and sound of a V8 - delicious.

I rest my case........:praise:

will be giong for diesel.

what is the liner you mention.

The liner is basically the cylinder bore for the piston, under certain conditions they will move allowing the head gasket to lose its seal between the cylinder block/liner/cylinder head allowing the cooling system to be pressurised.

There are 2 options, replace the engine block with a very late spec one where the liner problem has been designed/engineered out or have your engine block machined to receive "Top Hat Liners" these have a collar/ridge at the top and are held in place by the heads when bolted down.

Both options require an almost bottomless pocket.....

But beware the BMW diesel can be expensive to repair if you find one with a cracked cylinder head, but still cheaper than a slipped liner in a petrol.

Liner>Slipped>Sank=Titanic

I would say to find a car that has been owned by its current owner for a while, few years or more.

The EAS is definately something you need to look at for leaks. Check threads on how to do this, its easy.

Check the service records and receipts for parts and oils, to see if its been cared for.

I believe the general condition of a car, inside and out will reflect the mechanical condition.
