300tdi induction type air filters

I know K&N do an induction kit for the 300tdi with various pipes to the spoiler etc but is it possible to use one of the truncated cone type filters alone in place of the air box?

I am musing on ways to make space for a BIG second battery under the bonnet.....

...do the cones have a big enough surface area,throughput et al to be usable on road and all round?Anyone have experience?Or theory?

iv got a cone K&N on my 300 tdi and it seems sound enough,it does make a bit of noise tho!

Hang on though....with the air filter up on top of the snorkel it will be getting loads of cold air...Im thinking of just using a filter in the engine bay without the cold air intake pipe that comes in the K&N Offroad Kit to save space....opinions anyone?

thats what I mean!You are getting loads of luvverly cold air into your engine intake whereas if I fitted just an induction filter I would be getting warm/hot air from the engine compartment.The K&N kit has a junction and a pipe to/from the spoiler to grab cold air but Im not keen on the expense or the space it takes up.I could always butcher the necessary pipe and junction out of an old volvo or similar but I want to maximise the space available for a battery......maybe a fan on the back of the intercooler would make up for the air temp thing without taking up battery space ???

I aint dissing your rig bruv,its all cool,innit?Yeah but no but yeah etc etc

come to think,since this would be on the bog standard manual vehicle theres space to stuff a couple of electric fans on the outside of the rads and intercooler...the scrapyard is full of donors...renault and the jap hatches are the lowest profile Ive found yet

My only opinion is don't.

I off-road my Disco so an air inlet in the spoiler would only mean a quick engine death if you even look at a puddle, let alone wading.

Same answer from me .. I've had my engine bay under water before .. and I still haven't got a feckin' snorkel yet ...

Yeah, but the inlet is under the nearside wing, so is a lot cooler than the engine bay .. but yes, still prone to water ingress, hence my need for a snorkel .. and my opinion that anything less than 5' + off the ground is not worth fitting ...

I have one on my disco, threw away the box and fitted it to the hose that went to the box, used the exposed threads of the shocker to support it, with a nice little bracket. Runs fine and no difference in noise, I guess if you wade up to your bonnet it will take in water tho, but by that time your feet are wet.

I got mine for 5 quid at a breakers, had loads of them so they did.
