I found this site a few weeks ago so thought I had better register and say hi.

Started looking for a decent p38 diesel last month but since reading the posts on here am not sure whether to get a discovery td5 instead. With a budget of £3.5 - £4.5k I welcome your thoughts/opinions (however harsh ;) ).

Cheers Iain

:tea: Hello and welcome to LoonyZone.

Personally I'd go for a 300Tdi Disco if thats what your after. Bit easier on home maintenance than the TD5. With your budget you should have a wide choice. :decision:

Good luck and post some piccies when you get one.

300tdi every time, dont bother goin down the td5 route.if yuv got about 4 grand why not go fa a 90 or 110 yul get a gud n fa that sort a wad.

A was wondering,,,,, people who say 300tdi every time,,,,,, is it because that is what they drive or because its the cheeper option,,,:scratching_chin: not that am dissin the motor far from it, spose its all down to what you want to do with it, school run, shoppin, towing, laning, work, dog'n or a bit of everything, its horses for courses, just dont ever go down the hippo route though,:rulez: Anhoo welcome tae the cheese farm,,, hope ye have fun an buy a good un,,,,,:)

Thanks for the replies, I have looked at the 300tdi but the available ones around here are looking a bit tired and am not sure about the 'rust free' imports. Would love a 90 or 110 but couldnt get the wife to agree (I have tried before but her indoors wouldnt have it  ). The plan is daily use as I do a few miles for work but also green laning on occasional weekends.

Took out a 1999 td5 GS with 60,000 miles and fsh the other day which seemed ok bar an intermittent squeak from the rear ns wheel but that would be sorted by the seller. Didnt know if £4500 was a bit steep though.

Cool :) . Have spoke to the seller am going back tomorrow weather permitting to have a good look around it, didnt get a chance the other night as it was getting dark so couldnt really get underneath.

Is there much to look out for other than rust in arches and boot floor? and checking the pressure in the pipes?

Update...

I've got one :)

After looking around many different Discos & P38s I finally found what looks to be a nice example. It's a 1998 P38 4.6/lpg converted (sorry to those who said don't buy a hippo ;) ).

Piccies to follow
