Food for though indeed, the trouble is the diff in mine (front) is leaking and want to exchange the whole thing. As I said, I swapped the rear from the donor car (same year, 200tdi, but with r380 box) after 3000miles the transfere chain rings like a bell. So i want to swap the front axle to pair with the rear and put the r380 in. My lt77 had viscous diff lock, the r380 is selectable. Will this be Ok?

They are all 3,54/1 ratio. What a fuss ! Just change the top swivel pins for non ABS and nobody will ever know.
Really ? I think even Land Rover would argue that.Borg warner transfer boxes dont need an excuse to pack up,his diff ratios are BOTH 3.54/1 and are not the cause of the TB failure.Standard diff for 200Tdi is 3.45/1. 3.54/1 is an alternative but not a standard fit. You must have the same ratio front and rear. From what he says about transfer chain obviously this guy does not.

If you want to argue at least know your product - they are all 3.54/1, read a LR W/S manual or look at Ashcroft Transmissions if you need more info.He says he has fitted the rear axle from a 200 Tdi the diff ratio of a 200 Tdi is 3.45/1. If the diff ratio of the front axle is 3.54/1 that would cause the transfer box problem.

This is useful stuff. I could add to it by confirming the numbers stamped on the new rear axle, however, I scrapped the old one so no comparison. Surely the transfere would have packed up sooner? I drove to cornwall from the lakes and back (and all over cornwall) with no probs at all. As I say, 30000 miles after the swap came the issue. If i haven't done the rear diff in, i hope swapping the lt77 with viscous 230 transf. for the r380 with selector 4wd should solve the issue. Does this spund ok?
