Well, my issue all came down to a bad MAF (Have a new one on now - only a cheapie but will get a better one in the next month or two) I have also replaced the intercooler hoses (well 3 of them £30 from fleabay) fuel pump and filter (also have done the R5 thermostat mod - wow) and changed to Esso Synergy Supreme+ diesel. Now have warm, quiet running relatively economical car. What a difference. I'm smokeless too! I can also recommend regular doses of Millers Oils (I went through 2 bottles in 3 months) to clean out the system and injectors.

I need to do the stat ,what do I actually need to buy and where does it go, I've had a quick look at some posts but I really don't know what I'm buying and what happens with the old one.

Was going to do this mod myself but found a post on here somewhere that didn't recommend it if you tow big trailers well I tow 1500 kgs with our caravan so I'm now undecided what to do apparently it causes overheating whilst towing

Mine does this misfire with smoke at 2k Rpm. However it only does it when the engine is unloaded. Any load on the engine and it runs smoothly without smoke or misfire. I would describe my smoke as more blue than white however. It doesn't smoke at any other time except when the engine is held at 2K Rpm. The longer it's held at 2K, the more it smokes. However it only smokes when it's misfiring.
Did you ever find the resolve to this. I'm currently the same. Not all time but some reason doing 2k slightly pressing pedal you get a chuffing and juddering from engine and what best describe is grey smoke. Just as you describe above image changed pcv filter changed boost hoses inc one at back of turbo. Really weird as its fine for a while like do a 15 20 mins drive then it suddenly start. Once left for a bit and cooled it runs fine again untill it starts doing it again. I'm getting answers from everything ti turbo seal gone to injectors or fuel pump on way out

I reckon it was something to do with the crankcase vent causing contamination of the intake air. I didn't check for this, and sold the vehicle when the gearbox failed and the FL2 came along.

Yeah I checked it, it had the upgrade mod on it I've replaced rhe rubber seal in tip of cap. I did have a crack in the lid of the rubber seal side but I glued it back for now. That's what I seem to also come back too tho it got be sucking hard some reason and sucking more oil into the the breather. I'm just at a loss and stuck in the lakes away from home even left my reader at home so can't check codes 🙃

If by upgraded mod you mean the BMW cyclone separater, then it's not an upgrade at all, just a way of eliminating 1 more item from the maintenance chart. The cotton reel filter is much better at capturing oil, which would otherwise pass to the intake system. The cyclone separater allows more oil through, along with combustion byproducts, which is what I believe is causing the 2k misfire and blue smoke. Under normal running it's not an issue, as the amount of fresh air in relation to contaminated air is large, but when holding the throttle at 2k off load, there's little fresh are coming in, so the amount of contaminated air is large.
One test I didn't do was to allow the PCV to vent into the atmosphere, with the connection to the turbo intake plugged.
A BMW driver would never notice the 2k misfire, as the ECM prevents the engine running above 1800 RPM off load, same as most other German diesel engines.

So plug the hole. Let the pipe hang down and try replicate my circumstances to see if the issue is persistent. I'll also try get hold of new orignal filter for oil breather

Disconnect the PCV connection at the turbo intake, and allow it to vent to the atmosphere. The plug the hole in the turbo intake to prevent air bypassing the MAF. Then see if the 2k misfire still happens. My theory is it won't, but I'd like to have the proven or disproven.
The BMW mod was for BMW cars, but they run a completely different ECM, with a different set of parameters, so the 2k misfire would probably never come up.

Well I'll give it a trip to gym again in morning..it's 12 miles there and then 12 back today issue happened just after fully completed journey day before I got 2 miles from gym and issues started so once it stops raining here I'll pull pipe and get it plugged and let pipe vent and I'll report back
