Hi all>
I,ve got a TD4 2002 with 47k on the clock
It starts and drives lovely but if you start up and rev the vehicle to 2000rpm it misfires and produces excessive white smoke by 2400 rpm misfire goes, When driving all is ok, when warm you can still feel a slight misfire but no smoke
To date i have replaced
The Maf senser
The Map senser
Fuel filter
Air filter
Pcv valve
i have checked all wiring and plugs
I have also disconnected each injector in turn but found no fault
There is no engine warning light on
any help would be appreciated
Tim

Sorry to say this could be a injector pump, Had that on a GM diesel change and problem solved. Also change all your fuel filters first when was last time changed?

Fuel filters have been changed every year, last time was June,
If it was Fuel pump would it not happen at higher revs or when under load, I agree with the old style pumps it could happen but with common rail? Im thinking its more likely a senser fault or a dirty injector just hoping some one else has had the same fault and has fixed it

I've a rover 75 that has been run on neat petrol-drained tank and fresh filter and diesel and it is running like a bag of crap still- time will tell.
Waiting for a visitor, then out for a drive in the pile of ****

Have you inspected carefully the two intercooler hoses - the can collapse under pressure or a small hole open up - mine did the same although it was black smoke and then then let go completely. Changed them all was fine again.

hi check to see if the intercooler is getting hot if so may be a sign the pump is breaking up inside remove fuel filter and over a clean white cloth empty it look for small bits of metal if u do have that then pump inj fuel lines etc would req replacing sorry if i am the bearer of bad news

hi if it was black smoke then it would be hoses if it is white smoke 9 times out of 10 it is your turbo but it could be that possible I hope this helps

Ive checked the turbo every thing seems to be working nicely, cuts in around 1700rpm
As for the fuel pump, would it not be over a larger rev range and more so when actually driving, this fault only seems noticeable when vehicle not moving and reving the engine to 2000 rpm only found out it done it when i serviced the car and was allowing the car to bled the fuel system i then gave the car a few extra revs and noticed the mis fire and smoke, immediately thought something up with te new fuel filter so replaced that ( bitch of a job) since then i've looked and tried every thing, pretty sure its a injector just trying to save money and hopefully found someone else with the same problem, although im a mechanic our computer is main dealer and not for land rovers ( shame)
Might have to bite the bullet and pay out for a full diagnostic, unless some else has any ideas

Hi all,
I to have this exact same issue the car generally runs really well but if I hold the throttle at 2000rpm all four cylinders misfire like no ones business and loads of white smoke stinking of un burnt diesel flies out the back. If you listen carefully you can here the turbo fluttering in time. If you take the vacuum hose directly to the turbo control valve skipping out the solenoid, and then hold the revs at 200rpm again their is no misfire/no problem but obviously you cant roll like that. I reckon this proves that it is a sensor problem. So if anyone has solved this let us know

Hi everyone, I have 56 plate td4 with EXACTLY this problem.the vehicle has 38,000 on the clock and was running badly so I disconnected the maf, when I plugged it back in I have this same problem. Please help its doing my head in!!!

This! White smoke is nearly always down to turbo seals. You might try disconnecting the hose from the cold side, rev it and see if any oil comes out.

True, but surly this would have shown up before? It's only happened since I disconnected the maf? And only when the engine is cold. Thanks

Hi Guys, I have the same problem as this with my freelander and I cant seem to find any definite solution to the problem. The freelander misfires at about 2000 rpm and clears about 3250 rpm and is not noticable when driving. Did anybody get a solution to this problem?
Cheers.

Hello. Ive been told by a mechanic my fuel pump needs replacing becuase it splutters when its cold, however there are 3 different fuel pumps. Which one do I need? Its a 53 plate 2 litre td4.

There's only 2 fuel pumps on your car - low pressure pump in the wheel arch and high pressure pump on the engine

Which one have they said need replacing?
