Mine's let me down this evening, 2011 TDV8, it's been playing silly buggers on odd occeasions abroad last week, this evening, went to go out, press start button, press foot brake, click. nothing. Tried several times, and it refuses to start, just a click from the back end somewhere. I had a similar fault on my 08 TDV6, it was a faulty earth from engine to chassis, any idea if this is likely to be the same sort of problwm? Battery drop test shows 14.6 volts, drop test on, volts drop down a bit but shows battery is good. Seems like I might have to call home start recovery in the morning. i'm just glad it went defective at home and not when we were abroad last week!

try putting jumper lead from battery - terminal to a metel part of the engine and see if its a bad earth

You shouldn't be seeing 14.6 anywhere while the engine is off. What was the voltage drop?

My bad, 13.6 I think, it's difficult getting my drop tester to the battery, it seems I have to dismantle half the car to change the battery on this one! i'll try the jump lea to the engine if I can fond a metal part on the engine, everything is hidden on these cars. I had a similar problem on a previous voguse, an additional earth strap sorted it. anyway, I've got home start recovery coming over to see if it's a simple fix. I've got no reason to think it's a starter failure as such. I can't measure the voltage drop when starting because it won't start. Voltage drop after test was still in the green bit, I'll double check in a while.

The other problem, not so important, I had the heater valve replaced a few weeks ago, got the aircon re-gassed. Heating now works as it should, aircon takes quite a while to blow cold air into the car, just very hot air when it's been in the sun all day. Driving along, it takes about 3 miles to blow cold. Any ideas on that one?

I just re-checked battery volts, 12.6 standing, 11.6 volts after 10 sec load on drop test. Roadside recovery lad didn't have much of a clue, I suggested trying. jump lead from battery to metal part on engine as suggested by my indy garage, he put jump lead on battery to top of shock absorber... I can't actually see and metal parts on top of the engine.

As an aside, we couldn't work out how to disengage pak brake/gear to neutral. Simple, remove drinks tray, there's a little flap under there, with a key or big screwdriver there's a lock, turn it a quarter turn, under that is a red lever, pull that up and gear drops into neutral.

Jump lead from battery to top of shock will do nothing, has to be to the engine.

Yes, so I realised, but the recovery driver should have known that. anyway, the car got recovered, diagnosis is that all earths are ok, it needs a new starter, not much change hours to change it!out of a lot of money! They reckon 5 hours to change it. Oh well...

Needs a new starter? Sounds a bit like jumping to conclusions to me.

Brakes dragging?

On mine they say they've checked the connections and earths. Thinking back the fault occurred a few months ago as well, then at odd times in the last 2 weeks.

Had a bit of bad luck and then good fortune. Had work mens large van on driveway today and decided to reverse the P38 off passed it. Yikes caught passenger wing mirror on their side door handle and made a mess of the mirror. My fault no damage to van so told the lads not to worry. Gonna cost you a fortune mate though innit was their reply. Don't worry my problem. Quick phone call to my good mate Shaun and he had one in and the same colour as mine. So 20 mins later replacement mirror fitted for mates rates and the lads couldn't believe it. Thats what happens when you live 400 yards from a P38 spares and replace yard :D
