Hi,

We bought our defender 90 about 6 years ago, it was someones project, so they added lift kit, wheel arches, and massive knobbly tyres. Also, they fitted it with Discovery 1 V8 engine and gearbox. Since owning it, we have changed engine and gearbox for a "newer" version, simple enough to do, even with our limited skills and equipment. The engine also has a single Edelbrock carb on it.

Decided to buy another Discovery 1 to use as the parts shed and have a spare engine just in case, and for something for hubby to play with on rainy days. Since taking the engine out and starting to clean it, we noticed that the engine is painted, and doesn't have an engine number. We phoned up Rimmer Bros for a new cam and explained it didn't have an engine number, so what parts did we need. They said the number on the engine means it is a replacement engine directly from Landrover sometime in it's life.

We emailed Landrover themselves to find out why there isn't an engine number, and we got a generic reply, that we should contact our local Landrover dealer and buy parts from them.

My question is, has anyone ever come across the same thing, and if so, does it matter that we don't have an engine number. There is a plate on the engine where the engine number should be, but it is completely clean with no signs of the engine number having been ground off, and is painted in the same stuff as the rest of the engine.

Sorry for the long email, I got carried away with the "introduce myself" bit.

Welcome to LZ.

It may be that there is a number, but you can't find it. The numbers can be almost invisible on a painted block.
Link below to a site that tells you where it should be, and what sort of number you are looking for.

Also, this section is for Introductions, so you may get more attention in the Defender section.

Welcome:).

Got pics, we like pics:D.

Re the engine number I take it its a V8 (dont need to bother he did it ^^^)
it may be hiding under paint on the block now you know where to scrape:D.

Thanks for the info Turboman. Sorry for posting on the wrong bit. Will do another post later. And Yes to Marjon, it is a V8, and no we haven't scraped the paint off yet. Only just managed to get the oil off! Will put this post on the relevant forum later today. Thanks

Welcome if its a replacment block it most likely wont come with a number stamped on it..also if I recall they sometimes stamp the block not by the dip stick but at the back where bell housing bolts to...

They said the number on the engine means it is a replacement engine directly from Landrover sometime in it's life.

Just re read do you have a number if so post it up and or go to glencoyne web page and see on their list its origin..
