Disco 2 autobox overheating warning light.

Hi!
As a I am abroad without my drivers handbook, , altho i have my Haynes which is as much use on this as a chocolate teapot......
Can you please reassure me that the warning light for the autobox oil (ATF) overheating is in fact the red light in the top right hand quadrant showing a thermometer vertical inside what could be a cogwheel?

.....er, I do have RAVE and of course the Owner's handbook for the NAS versions is in there.
Which confirmed what I thought.

It is 35 in the shade here.
Our journey home involves a climb of 360 metres odd in 10 minutes.
And I do have an autobox leak.
Which I think might have something to do with it!

Time to top it up again!

More than likely with both the high ambient temp and the fluid level a bit low is the reason for the fluid temp illumination. If it was here in the uk u would expect the temp sensor… most times,

I do know I have a leak, which i will only be able to cure once I get back to blighty. It is a case of finding someone decent enough to do the job without trying to force me to get a perfectly good (otherwise) box rebuilt.
I did find a bloke just before i left for France and he will do it when i get back.
Meanwhile it is, get under with a plant spray pressurised thing every now and then!!!

You can fit one of these https://www.lubricationuk.com/portfolio/3-d-bullseye-oil-sight-glass/ instead of the filler plug , or google out "M16x1.5mm Metric Male Brass Oil Level Sight Glass" then you can watch the level to be on the safe side. A friend of mine fitted a D1 auto gearbox sump which fits to the D2 box too and it has dip stick

As the level can only be checked, as things stand at the moment, with the engine running, i.e. with oil sloshing around in the box, I can't see the sight glass being much use, unless I could find somewhere else, safe, to install it on the box. i.e. higher up, above the sump even, maybe. And then you would need to know where the level is when stationary and switched off. in fact i don't know if that would be possible, as there is always ATF in the box apparently, as each time I have taken the sump off, ATF drips down for ages and ages. The level would be above the level of the top of the sump anyway.
So I can see why your friend fitted the D1 sump, that really does make sense and I cannot imagine why they didn't keep that idea on the D2.

Update: just checked the level and there was very little loss certainly no more than I would expect with the leak so it deffo isn't leaking oil worse than before.
So it is either the sensor or the oil cooler.
I have a feeling it may be the latter.
This has never happened before even towing a 3 tonne trailer up motorway hills, but the previous owner only used the vehicle to take guns out and around shoots and although he pressured washed i underneath I know he never got into all the nooks and crannies, so I doubt he ever attempted to clean the cooler.
So now I think I need to have a look and give it a clean out.
Would I be right in thinking it lies behind the lowermost grille on the front?
And would that come off if I undid the hex headed bolts?
Or is more complex than that?
and would I find all this in RAVE?
All suggestion would be most gratefully received so thanks in advance.

Hi Stan, just seen this & it may be of no help but the connector for the oil temp. switch is by the battery + terminal see pic. It's impossible to see the sensor unless you take the battery box out so I'm not sure if you could change it with the cooler in situ (it would be messy!) Does the light come on when the engine is cold with ign. switch in pos. 2 ? If so it's probably the sensor. I would have said as long as the oil level is correct & unless something drastic has happened to cooler you should be ok. Best of luck & hope it's just a dodgy sensor.

I am convinced it is just a dodgy sensor combined with the exceptional heat and the climb, also as someone said somewhere if climbing a steep hill, it ios a good idea to knock it into pos 3 so I get lock up above 30 mph. as when it is in D the torque converter is working hard and making the oil hot. I can get to 30 on that hill but not 55 as that wouldn't even be legal if I could do it. And the tight bends all 44 of them preclude that anyway.
I'll leave it till I get back to blighty, only got one car here so can't be feckin about with it that much!
