Cracks in Tyre Tread

I have serviced the Hippo this weekend and have checked the tyres and 2 of them have cracks in the tread going most of the way around. They have only done 7000 miles and still have over 5mm of tread on them and only been fitted for 2 years. Goodyear 215 65 16.

I know the general idea is to have 4 matching tyres in both tread pattern and depth but I don't really want to spend on 4 new tyres when 2 are still ok,

What are peoples thoughts on just fitting 2 new ones and putting the others on the rear?

Tricky one. Depends on how you use your car (motorways etc)?
It’s probably sunlight that deteriorates your tyres.
If you have concerns I would get the advice of a reputable tyre fitter to be on the safe side

If you do get 2 new ones, the new ones go on the rear. This is due to the slight under gearing of the rear axle.
 
Never an easy desision. Personally I would carry on using them, Try to avoid leaving them in the sun if you dont do many miles. If they were dangerous the mot should pick them up.
Caravan tyres often have full tread and have to be thrown away but thats the cost of safety.

Personally if you purchased the tyres and have a receipt i would be going back to the place i purchased them from, and seek some new ones, they should last longer 7,000 before cracking like that. I had this happen once on my MGZT took the tyre back, had to wait for it to be inspected, which took about two weeks but got a refund.
 
I had tyres go in a very similar way, they weren't old and not done many miles, but they were the cheapest i could get at the time.

My view, you know the state of the tyres, keep a close eye on them and don't do any high speed/long distance, they should be ok. Just do regular checks to see if they get any worse. Do they lose air? If so I'd replace now as they could leave you stranded

+1. Two year old tyres should not have any such issues, even in full sun their entire life.... GoodYear have had some issues in the past, and IME, they'll just replace them ... Date code on the tyre wall will prove their age, but I'm guessing you knew that :).....

+1 on these refund posts.

You've paid a premium for Goodyear tyres over cheap Chinese ones - you expect value for money.
 
Find the date stamp on the sidewall, it is in a 4 number format ie 3118 = week 31 2018

I would say whilst they may be okay to use the end is nigh, I see a lot of perishing on truck tyres but very rarely in between the tread blocks.

Iirc the makers say something like 7 years lif span.
Law has just changed on truck/buses, nothing over 10 years old on the steer axles.

After reading this, I went and checked my FL2 tyres, which are cheap imports. Sure enough, I've got some shallow cracks appearing between the treads.
I'm not going to worry about it unless the crack are to the cords, especially as the tyres only have a few k miles on.
They have however been sitting in the sunshine for months at a time, which is the cause of such deterioration.

Well I have contacted Goodyear today and have asked for their advise.

I expect they will say there is no problem but you never know. I will keep you all updated.
 
Well had a reply from Goodyear and they want me to find a dealer who will send them to them to inspect.
Strangely no one wants to get involved, garage that fitted them is now 75 miles from me so not really an option to take them there.
Waiting to see what they want me to do now, back flips and somersault no doubt.

What was the date on the tyre sidewall?
