DPF problems for a newbie

How do you normally drive & what typical distance ? DPF need regular blast up the motorway for 30-40 miles to get the cleaning process to work. Diagnostics should show the cleaning status & when last one was.

Son's Jag XF 2.7D was getting regular DPF errors, but he was doing 10 miles a day in local traffic. Blast up the motorway "like he stole it" every 2-3 weeks has resolved the problem !!

I would have thought if this is an ongoing problem with certain DPF's by now so some would have cut a few open to find out what the problem was. Maybe that's how the dealer has diagnosed the issue

Are they using the signal values from the dpf sensors and the emission levels out of the exhaust, to understand the fault? High emission levels would assume the dpf wasn't working. A leak (crack) bypassing some or all of the filter being the theory.

A cracked interior would I've a high pressure on the out put side I'd have thought or less resistance on the input side depending how it's monitered?

The tester must have either looked at the DPF Differential pressure Sensor (yes the Ejoke has one) in the ECU, or guessed based on exhaust soot in the tailpipe.

I doubt the average MOT place would bother with ultrasonic tests they are not required to do.

The diagnosis was by the Stealers,I just wondered how they reached it.;)

First question would be had it been driven like a diesel should be? Dpf failures seem to be self inflicted in 80 to 90 percent of the time.

If you purchased the car from a uk main dealer it will have a 2 year used approved warranty. Is an internally cracked dpf covered by that?

You need to bev the rollocks off it on a longish drive to get it nice and hot.
A typical "Italian tune-up" pre MOT. ;)

If it is like the FFRR L322 then driving above 50mph for 20 minutes will give it a good clean out when it is required., that is all mine needs, no need to give it an italian tune up.

Cheers

Doubtless very true. Sadly, anyone trying to drive on the M25 will usually be driving barely above walking speed for hours on end. ;)
