Two things - 1st. How ridged should the hose be between the turbo and intercooler? Wheels I appreciate it’s not pressurised, woukd I still expect to have some resistance when squeezing it. I would have resistance squeezing the softest loaf of bread, there’s just no resistance at all. Very soft.
2nd. How big must a split or horse make to make a noticeable effect in speed performance. Ie struggling on hills?
 
From what I can see, all jubilee clips are in place nice and tight. However, I have discovered a minuscule pin hole, I mean tiny. Would you realistically expect this to have any detrimental affect on top speed or reduction in speed going up hills.? Thanks
 
It’s ridiculously small, in fact I’m not sure it goes all the way through. It’s crazily soft however.

It could be the inside of the hose has perished and is now so soft it doesn’t really offer any support. As for the hole, you can use a couple layers of heat shrink tubing to repair boost pipes as a temporary measure.

thanks Mick, but I’m trying to diagnose the issue I’m have with the drop in top speed etc. A process of elimination. I’m assuming that pipe should be more resistive?

I wouldn’t say mine is very resistive to pressure, but I’m guessing mine are original from 1992, so I don’t expect them to be. Any hole, or leak, in the boost side of the pipe work will result in a pressure drop. That will result in a loss of power, however small/large. I would try and “bodge” the hole and see if it makes any difference. If it does, then look at replacing all of the rubber boost pipework.

Do you have a boost gauge fitted?

Without a boost gauge fitted, your basically guessing what is happening, and hoping you fix it by finding something obvious. I would buy and fit one, and make sure your building boost, and maintaining it. You don’t need to do much to get a temporary install, a T connector, length of tube to get into the cab, and the gauge itself. I got most of my bits from work, a few years ago.

I think I have an old Smiths one lurking around in the garage. Not sure about the tube etc. I will check.

I will have a look. I may have a T and some hose.

I’m guessing here, but at 1Bar, I would think washer hose would work as a temp “fit and test” solution.
 
The smallest split will have an effect, but 99 percent of the time you can hear the air escaping as a high pitched whistle/scream/whoosh noise when under load
The original hoses are going to be past their best by now.
As said above, they also delaminate inside.

Bugger me, if they delaminate to such an extent, Shirley they can not be air tight? For the cost of a new set of hoses, I would be sensible looking to replace them all. Also, I had a brief look at the injector pump, it doesn’t look like it’s been touched since new. Two of the screws are seized tight. I blasted them with fair amount of PlusGad and leaving it to fully penetrate over night.

If you mean the top screws? sometimes you need a decent pair of grips to crack them off, then they will spin out no issue, if they are solid theres a good chance its all standard, so well worth a look to make sure all is good inside.
 
If you're revving the engine from the FIP, while your under the bonnet, you should be able to feel a bit of pressure pushing back if you're squeezing the hose from the turbo to the intercooler. You'll not feel anything on tick-over. You'll have to rev it hard. Even then, you will not be getting the boost you would under load because the engine will rev high, very easily, with very little fuel needed.

I was opening it up at the FIP, but achieving very little. That would explain why however. I think this issue is now looking like an injector or a split diaphragm issue.

How many miles has the engine/injectors done?
I would change the hoses from the turbo to the intercooler and air inlet manifold first. A boost gauge is very easy to fit. If you have a unit you just need the relevant pipe and adapter to screw in to the back of the inlet manifold.
 
A boost gauge is a good thing to have in any event - even of only as a temporary / test fit. On the 300Tdi, there's a plugged hole in the back of the plenum - tapped M12*1 - same as the fuel banjo's ....

Your hose looks kaput - as in totally kaput, and I'd almost expect it to have collapsed internally.

What's your intercooler like ? Has it been cleaned out recently ?

The FIP will only allow / add boost under load - revving the engine from the FIP will not produce any appreciable boost - IMO, boost gauge first and go from there....
