After fitting new rear bags when I first bought my car over 4 years ago, the EAS has performed more or less perfectly. Then, on the M4 recently there was a beep, beep and the dreaded 'EAS fault, 35MPH restrict.' message.
Cutting a long story short:- slow drive home with suspension on 'access' height, all the switch lights flashing and the 'wading' light showing on the panel.
So far I've cleaned the contacts on the white plugs in the passenger footwell and established that the pump runs with a door open (although it never seems to cut off) so I don't know if the tank actually fills.
Bought a resetting gadget off the 'bay. My son's department, I don't understand that sort of stuff. He cleared the faults and indeed, the car rose and fell to order a couple of times - Great news! Didn't last though and now, the 'access' setting light is solid 'on' with the 'road' setting flashing and pump running but we get no further.
Lap top screen reads "RR valve stuck closed."
So, cap in hand for some help, please lads. Those coil spring kits are starting to look tempting and I'm under some pressure to be back on the road.

Could be Right Rear Solenoid in valve block. You can swap the solenoids around to eliminate one if you want to... (bit of a fiddle)

It’s the bottom left one nearest the exhaust silencer.

+1
I reckon it wen up and down a few times as it used the air in the tank and now its empty and wont refill

If its been feeding a leak your pump is probably past its best and want a new seal kit, do as mentioned above and test the system

Quite likely the right rear airbag or feed pipe has a leak, valve stuck closed is the ECU's way of telling you that the RR corner did not rise in the time allowed. Compressor is probably toast if has been feeding a leak, disconnect the blue pipe from the compressor to the valve block in the EAS box, put your thumb over the end with the compressor running if you can stop the air, the pump needs an overhaul.

Wammers has a walkthrough in technical section (top of RR section)
Shows how to test without diagnostics

I’m guessing diaphragm and your answer is in the first paragraph in the link above.

+1 follow wammers guide to the letter, you wont go wrong. Worked for me

I'd follow Wammers guide starting with output from pump first. Also, check exhaust hasn't got a leak and melted the tank feed pipe.
all these replies!

Thanks for the sound advice one and all. Right, I'll start with the pump then. Plenty to do... Good start to self isolation!

I'll let y'all know what happens, as it happens.

Thanks for asking, Mark. Yes, progress at last, thanks entirely to LZ guidance. Last Friday I monitored the output from the blue pipe, as suggested. Very poor it was too!
Promptly ordered a replacement pump from 'bay and it arrived midday today - Great service that - Pump duly fitted and all is now well.
Rise and fall operates like never before during my ownership. Wait and see how it holds by the morning. Just a little 'glitch' insofar as the car takes a little bow, at the front only,
down to motorway height and back up again each time the engine starts. Frankly, I can live with that and the next event will be MOT booked for next Wednesday.
Just hope I get through before the full lockdown comes. Inevitable now, I think.

Thanks again everyone. I'm letting you know that I couldn't entertain running as complicated old bus as a P38 without your help and support.

The pump will have failed because it's feeding one or more leaks. The airsprings have a design life of 7/8 years 80k miles. The fact that the front is dropping tends to confirm a leak.

Fair point Datatek, I haven't forgotten your advice. However, now I have a working system I will have a chance to slide underneath and look for leaks. Rears having been replaced 3-4 years ago I'm fully expecting to do the fronts soon.
This little 'trick' though is something different. When returning to the car the sitting height is fine and the right light is on when the Ign is turned. Then, a couple of seconds after starting it goes down to the 'motorway' light and immediately back up again. Seems to me that it is full of air at the start of the excercise. TBH I'm so pleased to get it back on the road! Wheels off tomorrow to do my checks for next week's MOT.

Brilliant news.
I had fitted a relay to mine, p38 that would cut the power to the EAS when the ignition was turned off.
It would start and head straight for access or wade height. When I re-installed the wiring as built the problem stopped..
Is there or are there any mods on the system that could cause some kind of a glitch on start up? o_O;)

I'd be looking at the white connectors at the foot of the A post behind the footwell trim

Now's the time for the white plugs, the cover is still off the footwell! First job for the morning, Mark, I've run the aftermarket relay for a couple of yeas now, sensible thought to change back to OE.

White connectors cleaned thoroughly and the relay changed back to OE............. Glitch is cured we no longer have the theatrical curtsey before every mission. No noticeable height loss overnight either, so it looks like the job is done and a victory for LZ yet again! Added bonus was our government's 6 month MOT extension. Mine was due next week.
