Made a late start as I have to wait for the sun to come around the side of the house a bit. Very hard frost this morning and today's jobs were to start with a lot of lying flat on my back under the engine :) Puddles on the drive were frozen solid
Took the sump off (was on there temporarily just with two bolts) In to kitchen, brake cleaner cleaned again and applied RTV. Back in to the frost and got the bottom of the block cleaned again with razor blade and then fine wet and dry, then brake cleaner. RTV just dry to touch, so got it lightly nipped up.
Bought new rubber mounts for the air box, but the threads were carp, so ran a die down them. Fitted airbox straps and then fitted air pipes to box and tried to fit the box. Was on AGES, but couldn't get the front strap to go far enough to get the metal latch to hook in to the opposite slot in the strap.   Then I realised the metal dowel on the front of the box wasn't dropping in to the hole in the strap     Wasted loads of time  Anyway, forecast good for tomorrow, so hopefully get the tappets set, exhaust on and a few more bits and bobs sorted and then get to turn the key :D

On a side note the young fella next door married a Northern Lass, he's from Cornwall. They have two kids of about 4 and 6 yrs. They've been here for about 4 years and so he's a bit acclimatised, but his mum and dad come up every now and then. They're lovely and are up this weekend. Main reason why I've not got a lot done is I've spent a lot of time talking to dad. :D He's a very practical fella and is very interested in the Landy. He's got an immaculate Volvo V70 Estate, it looks brand new:cool: It's been mildly amusing talking to him, because he can't comprehend the temperature or the frost. Likewise, I can't understand how folk don't expect a frost of a morning  Vive la différence, that's what I say. :D

Swapping out a broke engine, a loaded crane on a pebble driveway was a bit of an arse, lots of farting, grunting and F'ing.
Bloody hell, I know how hard that is on a smooth, tarmac drive. :( With the amount of effort that must have taken, I'm surprised you didn't sh@t yourself, not just f@rt for England. ;):D:p

I had to drop it, pull the crane back , lift it and let it swing then drop it again, about 20 F'ing times!

Nightmare!
Just thought, a couple of planks of wood would have helped. Like 6' fence boards.
Anyway, top effort that :)

Thank you, I was struggling with the planks, the crane kept slipping off them, to get it over the front I used planks and when it slipped off I had to use a big breaker bar to lever the wheels up to put the planks back underneath, with an engine dangling at 4 feet in the air I did crap myself once or twice, it really was a nightmare. I still have the old engine on the drive, no idea how I am going to get it to the shed to rebuild it!

Well done Al, proud of ya.

Got the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold on, tappets reset, oil in, antifreeze in and fired her up. Started ok.
Smoking out the back, but not sure if its fuel or oil as of yet. Turbo venting on to wing rather than feeding in to inter-cooler. Tried a sock jubilee clipped on to the inlet manifold, but it doesn't work, so I've bought a cheap filter cone off eBay tonight.
The smoke is actually worse than it looks on this video

When I get the cone filter rigged up I'll be able to take it for a spin and see what happens. If you don't know what I'm on about I'm trying to work out why my engine is burning so much oil. I'm hoping it's the turbo! If you're really interested my engine build thread is here. 300Tdi Rebuild It'll be a PITA reading through it though

Took the rear and 2nd row seats out, rubber matt out the rear, carpet up, guess what?

Very wet under the carpet, bit of hole and salts around some bolts, guess its the differing metals reacting.

Might have to look at all the door seals! And windows!

Drove to work & parked it up for another week.:(
It may be going into storage as it’s not getting used. Don’t worry no one will buy it so it’s not for sale
