Does that work with the battery disconnected?

Yes, the permanent live in the 7S socket is effectively connected directly to the battery. It might not work with a very dead battery though due to volt drop on the line.

What I was thinking was that it would connect to the positive but if the battery is disconnected, how does it get to earth to complete the circuit?

Because there is also a permanent earth in the 7S connector.

When my car superlocked the passengers side door and would not open there is a fault in the latch mechanism and i had to detroy the mechanism but breaking it with a long scrwdived down the widow seals there is a how either on here or in range rovers .net But i think you can only do it with the window downso you coukld have problems.
the other way is to cut thr u piece on the B post and get in.i have also heard that you can do it by shorting wires on the tailgate but cant find any how to to do this best of luck

Think in order to get the tailgate to short it would need power somehow and to be unlocked. Bit of a nightmare!

Luckily, I hadn't disconnected the battery, it had just gone flat enough not to be able to operate the door locks but by some miracle had managed to keep it's key sync.
Managed to get the bonnet up, stuck the charger on it and it unlocked on the fob!!! I'll take that as a win!!
Now just need to take the door card off and find out why the key didn't work!!
