Which axle is better, 24 spline or Salisbury?

As per title, wondering whcih axle is regarded as best, the 24spline or the Salisbury? Reason I ask is I know someone with an old defender project that has salisbury axle(s?) with drums on the back, and we are debating swapping to 300tdi 24spline axles to get discs all round. But we don't know if doing so would be a bad idea?
 
If it's a 110 they have Salisbury rears as standard, Salisbury fronts are very rare.
The disc braked rear you want to fit is not load rated for a 110.
Drum Salisbury rears can be converted to discs though cos I read it somewhere.
 
Depends on your use and the exact vehicle. The Salisbury isn't without faults, but the diff core is essentially a Dana 60, which is really strong and used on loads of bigger trucks in the US, from Chevy, to Ford and Dodge. Lots of options on replacement centres too, such as lockers, LSD's and the like. But all US based really.

Which 24 spline Rover axle are you referring too? If it's just off a Disco or D90, then they are fine for most use. But do become a weaker link. The Rover axle diff pan is smaller and gives a bit more clearance and of course matches the front. There are lots of upgrades too, especially in the UK for Rover axles.

If it's a 110, remember Land Rover opted to use a variant of the p38 axle on the rear once they stopped using the Salisbury (due to licencing costs I believe). They didn't use the regular 24 spline Rover axle.

They can indeed, I have done it with mine. Uses all land rover parts, and you make a 6mm spacer plate. I will dig out the write up I followed if anyone is interested. Think it was form another forum :eek:
Uses front hubs and discs, 110 rear calipers and caliper mounts, home made 6mm mount spacer, and I cannot remember which stub axles. but a very easy nut and bolt job to do.
 
If you can find the disc conversion writeup would be v greatful as I have a Salisbury rear on my 90 and would love to swop from drums.

you can just bolt on all the parts used on the salis disc to the drum case ,ive done a few hundred its quite easy

Link 2 gives two options, the first of which is the one I believe @jamesmartin is referring to when you use the later disc braked parts. Option 2 is a more affordable option and what I did, as you can use second hand hubs, calipers (I rebuilt with stainless pistons) and your existing half shafts. The only parts you need to purchase are the stub axles and caliper mounting brackets.

hubs and drive members are the standard disco defender 300tdi hubs,they should be easy enough to get second hand doing it the way ive done
