I just fitted a new cambelt kit ( stc4096L) to my 95, 300tdi. I only realised when i was about to refit the cam cover that the crank pulley has no lip to go through the oil seal. Have i got the right pulley or should i just put the old one back in. Have i overlooked something? had to rush it a bit before the old woman went mad at me for spending too much time in there :rolleyes:

The cam sprocket seal lip is on the inside ie you have fitted it correctly and the seal lip for the front housing seal is built into the crank damper?

Looks like you had old original unmodiifed cam sprocket set up.

I was looking at the original sprocket and assuming the lip pointed outwards into the timing cover seal. Never thought to look at the pulley and see the flange that goes into the seal.:oops:
Yeah, I noticed the sprocket was upside down in your picture. Easily done, mate. Especially when you are putting yourself under pressure to get it right. We've all been there. :D

It's what lynal said here. I cheated and used a picture ;)

Interesting that you had the original style sprocket on  Yours must be one of the last 300Tdi's to not have been converted

Mate don’t worry. We all bolt stuff back together with bits missing/backwards/upside down etc.

It’s par for the course and you soon learn, sort of...... I still do it

Usually dont mind bits going on wrong, left out but you only get one chance with the timing belt.
I wouldnt be suprised if its never had a belt change:eek:. Anyway slipped out again and got it all back together. Couldnt lock the crank to torque it so hit it with the rattle gun for a couple of seconds, along with thread lock, that should do it

Mark the bolt head and the damper with a paint line, that way you can see in an instant if its moved.
