my 2009 Land Rover red light came on and my daughter turned the engine off. Not it only will make a faint click when I push the start button. Will not jump either. Do I need to push the inertia switch? Thank you

so a freelander 2?
Which engine do you have?

How badly did it overheat?

When it was turned off, did it make only the faint click the very next time you tried to start it or has someone been trying (and failing) to start it a lot and flattened the battery?

A click often indicates the solenoid on the starter motor is trying to engage but hasnt got enough battery power to turn the engine over.

try jump starting it or charging the battery

any other warning symbols lit up on the dash?

I don’t think it overheated too badly. She turned it off immediately. I did try to jump it through with no luck. Seems to have power. the lights work.

Okay next step is to see if the engine turns over manually - hopefully is a manual as this doesn’t work in an auto.

Put the car in 2nd gear and take the hand brake off. While someone is sitting in the drivers seat without pushing any pedals get someone else to push it - it should move. If it doesn’t get the person in the car to put te clutch in - if the car can now be moved easily then there is a deeper problem in te engine - it’s likely seized.

With the key turned to the position just before you turn it to start, when the car is rolling bring up the clutch - see if that starts it.

For an engine to seize it would have had to get very very hot and over heated very badly for a prolonged period OR it ran without oil pressure for a short period of time, hence my question about are you _sure_ it’s the temperature light and not the oil light.

If the temperature light came on and you stopped the car immediately it would be very unlikely to seize. If it was ignored/not noticed for a period of time then it could happen.

If it was the oil light, then by the time you get to the side of the road and shut it off the damage is done.

Did the car stall or did it run at idle when it was overheating and needed turning off with the key?

Any other symptoms or noises etc?

Really need to know the engine for further help tbh, petrol or diesel?

It’s an automatic. The oil looked fine and was still a good color. I use synthetic oil. Sent it to the repair shop today. Hopefully it is nothing major. Thank you so much for you input

Is it a Freelander 2? LR2 is short fer this in the US market.
Is it petrol or diesel?

Is it a Volvo engine?
Not sure, but the repair shop called today and said the starter was bad. It just happened to go out at the same time it overheated. My daughter turned the motor immediately when she saw the red light go off so I didn’t really think that was the issue but I was just stumped. I started working on cars when I was about eleven years old but the cars I worked on were made in the sixties and the cars today so different. Give me a slant six with a manual transmission and I could tear it all the way down and back up again from top to bottom. I just need to admit that I should take my cars to the repair shop from now own . Unless it’s a very simple problem, of course.
