hi guys im new on here but have been using the helpful info on this fourm since i both my first land rover( a freelander) 5 years ago( thanks by the way) so hope you can help me with this same problem on my 96 2.5 auto disco and my 01 p38 range rover 2.5 dhse auto. here goes

then im driving alone on the motorway curising alone or in traffic moving alone and i want to slow down but dontneed to brake, and i take my foot of the accelator and the revs drop like they should, the check engine light comes on, on the dash for a second and goes out again, then i comes on i lose some power but then it kicks back in again, its not so bad in the p38 because you dont really notice is so much but inb the disco if im in traffic the jeep jumps out of gear and may jump back in and is quite rough, its geating to a point now where i can stand driving the disco, they both have around 130,000 mls on the clock

if it was only one of then then i could park it up till i sorted it out but now its both of them.anyone out there have anything like this happen to them that could point me in the right direction

ihave looked around a bit and this seens to be a common fault but i have not seen a ans anywhere on line, some one must have had this problem before and sorted it out, why would the check engine light come on for a second when you take your foot of the accelator pedal and go off again when you press it again, i have ssen a coupe of people on here talk about removing egr valve, why is that done and what are the fault that the egr valve cause?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Get the fault code read.

As Fanatic says you need to get your fault codes read before you start leaping to conclusions and ripping bits out.

I'd suspect information from the crank sensor, and/or number 4 injector, and/or MAF sensor myself and these you could only prove by rather expensive replacement or - get the faults read.

If you want to play about with your EGR then by all means whip it off, along with intercooler and inlet manifold and give them all a good clean. I doubt if it'll cure your fault but it'll give you something to do this weekend!

On the P38 It's probably the potentiometer (fuel measuring bit I think) in the fuel injection pump. I had the same problem. The flash on the EML light is so quick you only see it in peripheral vision. Do you feel the occasional engine stumble as well because I did. Usually when lifting your foot off the gas or coming off cruise control.
I got a replacement engine from a scrapper as it was cheaper than getting the pump overhauled / repaired. Try £650 + vat for an overhaul or nearly £2,000 for a new one, I paid £1,200 for a complete engine including fitting.
Can't help with the Disco I'm afraid.
Good luck mate,
Hoppy
