Hi

I suddenly got a nasty rattling sound from the front of my vehicle, and it made me guess it might be the timing chain that is stretched or the tensioner that is not working properly.

Is there a way to inspect it, and to conclude that the timing chain is the problem?
It is quite a big job and a costly one to change it, so it would be nice to be certain.
Right now i don't dare to use the car, as the chain could slip if it is loose.

Any other tips?

Best regards
Petter

First of all check if the crank vibration damper is loose. It breaks away from the rubber and rattles. You can certainly check the cam chain by removing the cam cover lower chain is not accessible.

Damper if it's failed is STC3345 but you may not wish to buy one from Land rover at their prices. Look around.

Please excuse the butting into a thread ...

Which engine is in a '97 DSE then? I was under the impression, gained a few years ago, that they used 300Tdi engines!!

And you remove the belts, the pulleys and the vibration damper to check if it is the vibration damper that is shot?

Will it cause any other problems with the car if I drive it in this condition? Parked in the street is not the nicest spot to work on it.

My tensioner went they other week.

Found this in sump and no 1 piston gone. Don't drive it even cranking can cause the chain to jump and cause major damage. Ended up changing the engine as it was beyond repair.

A guy was on the other day asking how to fit one in a P38. Maybe that's what you were remembering? Wammers was saying only an idiot would put one in a P38 IIRC.

+1 .. Why would you..?

Because the engine was shot but he happened to have a 300Tdi unit sat next to it in the shed. Now, arguably he could have swapped it for an M51 or sold it and bought an M51 but the unit was solid and working and he seemed in a rush. Wonder if he managed it?
