At speed, the aircon is blowing bloody hot, yes?
If the electric fan isn't pulling 100% air from the total face of the rad even under normal circumstances, it won't pull the additional bloody hot from the Aircon bloody hot and cool its own bloody hot as well in an efficient manner.!!

Were as a viscous would cut in and out with it's shroud regardless of vehicle and engine speed.... Damn it wammers...

The old Vis fan and the cowling were removed and all advice followed, I'm sure.
It was when the Aircon was on it decided to heat up?
Also while out on the Sunday morning it did the same until I cancelled the Aircon? If left on LO' it would up the temp but if left on 16-18° it would remain lower but not at normal...

As you can see hopefully, all is as it should be, even the grill has a pretty good air passage rate being mesh! Every other day it never blinks an eye.
I'm going to put a chemical cleaner through the system and flush every which way to be sure there is no crap in the system. ..
That mesh is a serious impediment to air flow, and that fan sucking will never cope.
 
It never ceases to amaze me just how far some will go to make their life difficult. There are thousand upon thousands of diesel P38s running around with well maintained standard cooling systems that never have a problem. ;):D:D
except that the viscous fails on a regular basis causing overheats.
 
Agreed wammers, the air con was on to cool us down Inside not to help the engine, as it is not wired to help cool the engine..
1st case was sat in traffic, the temp climbed.
2nd case was while we were moving at 70mph/110kph it would rise again while using the Aircon.
I should be able to use it without any worries id of thought?
The fan only helps on static traffic and upto a certain speed. As you know, so why would it lead to an overheat when using the Aircon as I should/could?
But then yesterday all was ok..
Sat stationery for 20minutes Aircon full blast and revs raised occasionally to help heat the engine all with the bonnet closed and not a eyebrow raised... It all could just be outside temperature but then these cars were built for hotter countries as well...
I think a strip down of all the radiator section to check for debris in the vains is the only answer I reckon after a good flush of the interior..
You have another problem, using just the airtcon fans in 36/38C aircon on flat out, the needle never budges past 12 o'clock on either of my P38's. Above 30/40 mph the fans only run from the aircon command as the ram airflow is sufficient to maintain engine temperature.
 
All done. Refitted a shroud and nicley fitting to the fan.
All refilled and sitting pretty.
Air con on low to push a little harder, bonnet closed and sitting pretty at 12°clock!!( Well, just before)
The fan now works half the time and definitely more effective.
Road test tomorrow will reveal the results properly.
No overheat problems Data, it never overheats!
I did find a lot of dust in the lower part of the rad and half an hour of blowing air from the compressor has cleared a lot of crap.:cool:
 
I have no business posting on this thread (other than owning a P38 4.6 Petrol) and wishing @Mark Piercy well in fixing his problem, but I have always believed that motor manufacturers have quite probably researched what is required for their product not to be constantly broken down at the side of the road and therefore parts are there for a very good reason. The actual quality of the parts (over time) may change as they seek to make more & more money by reducing costs but the basic designs are sound.
I do shy away from all species of "Modification" (but not refurbishment for repair) because it puts you outside of the envelope of RAVE, LR Dealer Support and INDIE experience and you are on your own (other than some of the real Genii on this forum).
 
I thought Datatek's mod did away with the v/fan and the rad cowl.
His mod does, I didnt do this on mine, just fitted an electric fan.. the big mistake was not using a shroud. As wammers quite rightly pointed out, the fan was only cooling its own size in surface area and not the whole face of the rad!! Now I have a shroud fitted it is all singing and dancing again! Thanks to all your input and better understanding and helping.;):)

The majority of cars these days use electric fans, quicker warm up when cold helps meet emissions regs.
