Yesterday one of the rear bumper lights failed on my 1998 disco. I replaced the bulb with a new but it refused to work . I turned off the switsh and replaced both sides with new bulbs, still no rear sidelights. I have checked all relevant fuses to no effect. Both front side lights are working as are all other lights Any ideas. If its a relay where do I find it wiring diagrams are not my speciality!!!!!!. Cheers guys.

From reading RAVE for the D1, it looks like the lights on the LH side are on fuse F2 and the lights on the RH side are on fuse F8.

Having said that and from your observation that the front side lights which are on the same fuses I'd say that your troubles aren't with the fuses.

I'd be inclined to start looking at the bulb holders first, check that the insides are clean and making good contact with the bulb and then I'd be looking at whether any of the wiring has been disturbed when the first replacements were fitted, but it would be my guess that the problem is due to poor contact in the bulb holders.

Notorious for either the bulb holder corroding or the pins inside the superseal connectors corroding and failing.

I had this happen years ago, you could try popping out a front indicator and using this bulb holder to see if the lamp works in that as the rear bumper lamps and indicators use the same bulb holders.

If it is the plug then you need a holder and a plug as there is little point replacing one without the other if there is corrosion, when refitting use a dab of vaseline to help it seal and repel moisture.
