a lot of the old whitworth sizes were known by other names.. fer instance the 1/2"" whitworth or 1/2whit as its more commonly called was known as 'the cornish spanner'

Quarter Whitworth spanners also fit 5/16th BSF nuts and bolts.

The spanner size is the diameter of the bolt for Gawd's sake.

Anyway, ¼ Whit spanner jaws are 0.525 inches / 13.34 mm AF.

They are still widely used in some applications, battery posts being one of them in some cars.

See here for the rest.

Half inch Whit is a hefty spanner.
Give the other guy a sore one that would.

AF = across the flats (of the head of a nut or bolt, square or hexagonal or more, but must be even)
BA = British Association
W = Whitworth
BSF = British Standard Fine
UNF = Unified National Fine (USA standard)
UNC = Unified National Coarse (USA standard) almost but not quite the same as Whitworth. Same pitch of threads all the way but slightly different thread angles. Will usually fit each other but may be tight.

Note that NONE of metric spanners will FIT anything else properly, but some may be close.
