Freelander 1 Drive shaft removal

Another question: I have to replace a split CV gator [ boot] on the inner driver's side. I plane to pop the drive shaft out and replace the gator. Do I need to drain the g'box oil first? Don't want it leaking all over the driveway?

I could remove the front road wheels and lower the passenger side down and lift the driver's side up quite high. will that keep the oil in?

Yes I'm afraid you do.

No you can't as the box oil level is well above the driveshaft spline hight.

Just drain the oil and refill with fresh while you're there.

Also make sure you only fit OE joint boots. The OE type is a hard and long lasting synthetic material. The soft rubber aftermarket boots are very short lived and not worth fitting IMHO.
