If you ever get the urge to strip one down they are a very simple mechanism.
They simply slide a fat cog down onto the drive shafts so the shafts turn the wheel rather than just themselves.
Problems can arise the other way round if you never lock them as some of the turney roundy bits inside the drivey bits need to splash themselves with oil now and then.

You shouldn't really leave the hubs unlocked for a more than a couple of hundred miles or so. I change from 4x4 to 2x4 and vice versa each time I fill up.

Oooh I love it when you talk all dirty like!

If your driving around in 4wd every other tank full you will be seriously wearing your tyres on tarmac.
Your advised to engage free wheel hubs every now and then to help lubricate king pins in front axle.
selectiong 4wd every now and then is just to prevent the selector shafts siezing in the casing , you do not need to drive with 4wd engaged for this purpose.

I don't think anyone is talking about driving in 4 wheel drive, just engaging/disengaging the freewheeling hubs. When they are set to 4x4, the vehicle isn't in 4 wheel drive unless it selected from the cab.

I leave the hubs locked on short journeys to get the lube on the pins, and set to free on long runs where I think I can save some fuel. Steering is a bit eaiser with them free and the braking is a bit better - less intertia to stop. Obviouly if I think I'll need 4wd I set off with them locked, not a lot of use otherwise if you have to get out in deep mud or as you slide backward down a hill!

Mine are unlocked 95% of the time...save around 5% fuel I seem to remember the fig is.
Only take 30secs to lock when req.

Engage or lock once a moth for a few miles to keep things lubed.

X1 on not leaving them too long engaged. Especially when driving around on road at faster speeds cos the whole front drive train is turning an tends to wear out hardy spicers and other moving bits. This is despite the fact that they’re originally made that way; FWH being an optional extra.

I usually run my S3 in 2WD, but set the freewheeling hubs to 4WD roughly every 160 kilometres or so, as recommended by Steamwally (at about 1.45 into the video) and drive a few kilometres. Perhaps it's a bit of overkill, but if it saves me £££, I'm okay with it.

X1. With the FWH engaged, the transmission up to the transfer box turns when driving but it’s not actually engaged as 4WD.

With 3.54 diffs I find I need to use low range to reverse park as high range reverse it too high. Its almost imposible on tarmac with the hubs locked so I hae them free for manourvering.

I switch from 4 to 2 at 13:47 every second Wednesday. Then back to 2 after 28.3 seconds of selecting low ratio. I then switch the lights on 14 times and rearrange the pencils in my top pocket according to colour in alphabetical order from right to left as looked at in a mirror.
After counting all the blind rivets on the exterior I cross reference via my co-sign chart and slide rule to determine how many times to lock the garage door before polishing the kitchen.

We need you to upload a training video, don't keep the benefits of this amazing routine all to yourself. I've no doubt it stops rattles, smoke and improves complexion all at the same time.

Surely you should change from 4 to 2 at 13:56
