Last week the steering on the old girl went very solid ( like a slipping belt ), seemed to get a bit better, but still on the heavy side. I’ve also noticed an engine braking effect whilst coasting and a reluctance to get up to speed. Can a duff pump cause enough restriction to slow the engine down via the main belt?
Belts are in good nick and at correct tension, fluid level is fine, steering UJs are all good and no leaks from the pump. 200tdi Disco engine.
Ta muchly

I take it you have checked the belt tension and fluid level and the power steering is working.
Other things to check are the track rod,if it is a bit bent then it can bind in the guide on the diff and steering feels stiff at times,Also if tracking is out some it can feel like engine braking and you will soon see wear on your tires.Steering pivot bearing fail could give similar symptoms.Any restriction in the steering box would result in a noise like in full lock.

All of those checked and fine. It definitely feels PAS related, I didn’t think it would slow the engine down that much, although idle is fine.

Well, that’s weird... haven’t driven the Landy Saturday and she appears to have cured herself!? Heavy, notchy steering has gone, as has engine braking. I’m still getting an unfamiliar noise when I do turn the wheel, so I’m going to check all pipes for restrictions ( bust o-rings and the like ). Weird how it did this, maybe some air pulled in somewhere.

Have you bled the whole steering system?
Is the fluid bubbly or slightly creamy looking?
With you saying that it was notchy with a bit of (undescribed) noise, it could simply be an airlock!

I think a decent service is on order this weekend, the drive home to night was awful, something’s really not right. Felt more like swivel bush/bearing or TRE. Bloody thing!

There is a section in the Rave manual for steering issues including stiff steering.

I had a look at mine this week as it felt stiffer than I remembered, although it could just be the difference between the D2 and the 90 on MT tyres, I cracked the drop arm ball joint and checked to see if the wheel side / steering box -column moved easily. Decided I could not feel anything strange. Next stage for me is trye pressures and driving without the winch and bumper fitted to check if that makes a difference.

Cheers

I’m going to have a thorough investigation at the weekend, start at the steering wheel and work my way through the system. It’ll be something simple to fix, just a matter of finding what!

A soak in wd40 usually frees them off and then they need changed.
Test with wd40 and if it gets better then that was the fault, no difference and carry on down the system.

Well, after doing the work intended, water pump and timing belt change.

Decided to have a look at the power steering again, looks like the pump is on its way out. Fluid is getting foamy, so ordered a new one and will fit that.

Cheers
