If the reverse ban has fallen off it will need to come off though won't it?

If the wrong bolt has been removed, then yes, it'll need to come off and the casing split. You might as well replace the reverse band at the same time, as they have been known to wear badly.

Theres one on the bay at the moment with just this issue. I'm guessing that's what's happened.

Unless you've got a hoist, very tough skin on your knuckles and a tendency to enjoy pain - I'd say let it go. There will be others with easier fixes! Have a look on Gumtree - it didn't exist when I was still in the UK, but it looks like there's lots of cheap Freelanders on there (or was last time I looked).

Its rather difficult to do a 1 wheel up test on a test drive, but make sure its got a prop shaft running front to back, 4 matching tyres (I know that's no sign of its history) and reverse around a corner and make sure it doesn't feel like the brakes have come on (ie VCU to tight).

Depends ont price. I don't know what price it's up for sale for but it may be discounted enough to get it fixed at a garage or a recon fitted instead.
