Hi I'm away from home until Saturday and my wife has phoned to say the freelander 2 has lost power, the amber engine warning light is on and the power steering has gone stiff. It is also making a whining noise. Can anyone give me any ideas as to what might have gone wrong?
TIA

A bit of a development today.
My wife called the breakdown out on the way to work and the mechanic checked the codes. None were recorded. He then checked oil and water. Oil needed nearly 3 litres. Immediately the MEL went out and the whining stopped.
The car had a "full service" less than 600 miles ago
On the way home she has reported that it still lacks power.
What could be causing it to loose power?

With amber engine warning light on then there has to be fault codes stored - is it manual or auto?

Auto can bring on EML

Need to get it diagnosed properly by analysing live data from the car along with faults from all modules on the car

Where's all that oil gone? You got a serious leak? That amount of missing oil would make me think serious engine damage

The loss of power was down to a sticking EGR valve.
The oil the break down service put in was actually power steering fluid.
My wife thought it was oil. I have got a leak from a power steering pipe that has corroded. I have ordered a new pipe.

That sounds cheaper than a new engine ... you got away with that ....

Now, about this service it had ....

did the visual inspection spot any weepage from the steering pipes ?

Nothing notes on the service report. It has been leaking for some time by the amount of oil build up.
The service was allegedly done last June and before I brought the car. It's only done 600 miles since June.

Was it garage bought ? mention it to them if so, they 'might' want to chip in with the repairs ...

I'd change all steering pipes/hoses unless the leak is due to a chaffing problem ... ooo Matron !

Yes it was garage bought but the problems have started after the 3 month warranty has expired.
I sorted the EGR valve myself. I had a water leak which I fixed myself and the PAS pipe has cost me £60 and I can fit it myself.

Good lad, it'll be less hassle that way too ...
