Report from the engineer who examined the car is...drum roll..'Not fit for purpose'..I haven't got the full report yet but that was the condensed answer to my questions, I will post the (long) list of faults when I receive them. Now where is my barristers wig?

That's more like it ,better than a fag or a cupped hand. Just check it before you wear it.:);)
 
mmm...distinct silence from the folk who sold me the car since I sent them the report ( I said I would post a detailed report but the engineer did not give me a detailed report, apparently 'not fit for purpose' will suffice, they have till Friday to answer my 'rejecting a used car letter'. Probably a long drawn out affair but then I've got the time and inclination to see it through :)

The old oil was dirty and smelt burnt, we found a procedure online to replace the oil and since then the gear change has been much better though the minor faults are still there.
First thing when I reverse off the drive and then select D there is no drive for a second or two then it slurrs in and will be fine all day.
My second fault is at small throttle openings between 30 and 55 mph with the box in 5th, if you depress the throttle slowly it wont change down which is fine, but a vibration is felt through the car as if you had driven over the white lines on the motorway and the car will not accelerate. Give it more gas and the box changes down and away you go. Doesn't do it all the time but bad if fully loaded.
Any advice would be most welcome, also can anybody recommend a good Independant in the Birmingham area who knows the L322.

HI Ian,

I have been through this exact same fault. I spent a lot of time asking about best oil to use. I ended up buying G-Force ATF-LV low viscosity Dexron VI
I bought via amazon from Opie Oils, that plus an original LR filter. It worked for me and I really do believe the correct oil will help - it seems all the wisdom on here says the box will fail at some low milage but I was up to 175K before I sold my my L322. It was still going ok - still had same problem but never failed.

Hope it works for you.

I sold my L322 in the end and am now looking for a less complicated ( less expensive ) series landrover

How much did you pay for the report, just saying not fit for purpose is a bit lightweight to me?
 
The inspection cost me £255 which I can claim back from the courts (if it goes that far).
The vehicle was inspected with the aid of a trolly jack.
The following conditions were noted: Both front wiper blades do not fit correctly and insecure to arms. Left rear light cluster lens cracked. All side lights flash intermittently at times when the engine is idling. Headlight flash does not operate when headlights are off. Service indicator shows -15675miles over due. Excessive oil/fluid loss covers the underside. Gearbox oil losses are excessive. Roadtest: The gearbox fails to operate correctly. There are several clunking noises at lower speeds when changing lower gears. Air bag warning light comes on at times when driving. Rattles from both front suspension assemblies when driving. Low ratio switch will not move. This rocker type switch is stuck on one position. The mileage was recorded at 121581, Chassis number SALLMAMA33A126606, the vehicle is fitted with budget tyres all with at least 5mm tread depth.
CONCLUSION This vehicle is found with a considerable number faults that will require rectification and ongoing attention, further faults may become apparent upon investigation and repair. As result of the collection of faults the vehicle is seen not to be "fit for purpose." All the described faults are seen to have been present at the point of sale. The owner has been advised not to drive the vehicle.
