Installing new TD5 turbo

Morning all, I've installed my turbo over the weekend and today will be firing it up. Other than putting oil in the through the oil feed hole and spinning the turbo vanes at bit is there anything else I need to do? I wondered if I need to try and turn the engine over without it starting somehow or something like that? Obviously it has new oil and filters etc.

thats ok as long as you dont rev it straight away

Thanks James, it will just idle for a while while I check for leaks etc, plus I will need to top up the oil as the genuine oil filter I got doesn't let you fill with oil - I don't normally bother anyway but thought this time (new turbo) I would try!

giving my line of work I have never poured un filtered oil before into a turbo and a filter from small vehicles to road trains
to keep warrenty on a turbo oil + filters as well as air filter is replaced

to prime disconnect fuel injection relay and crank over engine for several seconds do this a few times this allows the oil filter to prime up also

Why not disconnect the waste gate actuator and open the waste gate for the first start while you check it is OK, it would bypass the exhaust gas and therefore slow the turbo, after you are happy re connect it, Watch your fingers.

Unplug the injector harness, crank it for 10 seconds or so. That will ensure oil is through the turbo.

I'd discourage everybody to play with the injector harness plug if it's not necessary, it can be risky... if you want to crank it to not start IMO ozzyboydeano was spot on, remove main relay R9 then it will happily crank in vain

Happened to me to play with it and one of the pins was bent while trying to replug it which caused intermittent missfire and in other cases if the injector loom is not new and genuine the plug which is held in the head with the orings is not well fixed and can be pushed up with the external one...i've seen few cases that's why i say it's risky also removing the relay is easyer IMO and doesnt load the ECU's memory with injector open circuit fault codes

Ahhhhh ok fair enough! Thats what I did to feed my turbo, seemed easier than pulling the relay as I have bucket seats in.

ever heard of cross contamination ? seems like you need to get out a bit more....when you do wake up and realise ...the same reason you can install a dry fuel filter ,, there is a priming process involved just saying

another example filling an oil filter ..many people just pour direct into the centre of the filter ..this is unfiltered oil about to enter your engine cross contamination can be many things

very simple the oil you purchase from local shop may of already been transferred many times
another simple scenario while pouring how sure is the spout clean unless you can see down to a curtain micron

a perfect example do you wash your hands once been to the toilet ?

I haven't forgot thought the transmission filter is washed when new oil is put in LOL

thats a fact, atf is very high in detergent, if your filters full of debris or fillings etc you shouldnt be refilling in any case, which is obvious upon draining oil

yes I have used it to clean engines out .but where does the debri go ? but still say a full change is better than half a job change

fyi we purchase bulk loads at a time in IBC pods transmission /gear oil .engine oil/ even coolant and hydrulaic oil all from different suppliers there is normally a accumulation of dirt in the bottom when the IBC start becoming empty
as I have been trained by Volvo them selves they do not recommend pre filling filters as your actually relying some one else who supplied the oil and to be honest its actually common sense

oil the average joe buys is in sealed bottles, its the oil your filling the engine with , can take anything to ridiculous levels
