There are or have been some dedicated diag that uses a laptop. Anything you can get off Ebay for £30.00 WILL NOT work other than for the EAS. Nanocom is best diag for these vehicles.
When I had Bimmers I used an OBDII to ADS (the BMW round plug) adaptor and run the INPA diagnostic gear for the Bimmers....
The protocols the Bosch EDC system uses are proprietary to Bosch and unless you have the resources of the like of Blackbox et al, decoding and etc will be time consuming and mostly out of the range of the home DIY'er.....even the Legend that is Storey Wilson who has done a huge amount on the diagnostic scene for the home user in his spare time decided the Diesel P38 wasn't worth the effort as there are much simplier and more cost effective diagnostic solutions out there.....
