Hi, I just purchased a 2008 Freelander2 TD4 HSE. and it has the following issues. Would anyone know if these problems are easy to fix?

1) The display states Average MPG is 14. I have driven the car about 30 miles so far and this has not changed. Is this right?
2) The drivers seat moves slightly when breaking like something is loose. Would this be easy to fix?
3) When I shut the tailgate door, it is shutting but it seems to not shut properly. Not sure if this is normal?
4) When starting, the engine turns over about 4 times before starting. Is this normal?
5) Is it normal that the rear sun roof cannot be opened?
6) The electric morrors seem to struggle when opening out or closing. Would they need a greasing?

Thanks,

Thanks,
1) Have you read the user guide to ascertain the average MPG.
2) possibly
3) I doubt it. Most are designed to shut "properly"
4) do you use the Glow Plugs?
5) have you read the user guide?
6) use dry lubricant

Thanks for the answers. What I really meant to say was for point 1, Is this normal for the display to say a figure that is not accurate? I was hoping 14MPG was just an inaccurate computer. Hoping that the engine is not past it.

The other answers seem to point out that these issues are not normal so thanks for that. I was just amazed that the rear sun roof cannot be opened. I have never see a sunroof that cannot be opened before.

Many thanks,

Hope you got it dirt cheap!

One should never open Land Rover sunroofs. Doing so will usually result in the becoming broken half open/half closed - possibly closed on 1 side and open on the other. If you do manage to "shut" them again, they will then leak and rust.

If LR have sealed them shut with silicone - then they are just saving you having to do the job!

I have not seen anything about manually using the glow plugs in the manual. I am not sure what you mean by "Are you using the glowplugs". They are automatic all the time?

Thanks,

It sounds like a lemon to me. Did you get it from a dealer or private? If from a dealer, take it back as it's not fit for purpose.
If private, then unless you know what you are doing, take it to a reputable LR specialist for repair.

Mmmm, that was not the answer I wanted to hear. I just started it again and it turned over about 3 times which didnt seem to bad. There is no glow plug light coming on at all. But surely if there are no glow plugs it would not start at all. The only thing bugging me is if there is a performance issue then the display would state that there was a reduction in performance wouldnt it?

I also just noticed the service indicator in the on board computer screen.

Fill your fuel tank and zero/reset your mpg, mileage etc and see what it reads after you've done 50-60 miles, 14 mpg is down to a lot of idling etc while people look and prod!

Regarding the MPG. Ignore it. If it's only been on short trips from cold, with prospective buyer's thrashing it, it will show an unrealistically low figure.

The starting issue is far more of a problem. You stated that it "turned over 3 times". What exactly does this mean. Was it that the engine turned 3 revolutions? Or you stabbed at the starter 3 times without holding the key till it fired?
This needs clarification.

The glow plug light won't show unless the engine is below 10°C or so.

To start a modern diesel engine, follow the steps below:
1: Turn on the ignition, waiting until the glow plug indicator goes out.
2: Then turn and hold the key in the start position until it fires. This should happen within 5 seconds. Release the key when it's obvious started.
3: If no glow indicator shows, then do step 2 without waiting.

Fl2 is push button, press firmly and release, it goes thro its test cycle, heats and engages starter, job done
If it's a press button start. The ECU will crank the engine until it either starts, or times out. The post said it took 3 attempts to start. If it's timing out before starting, prompting another press, there's something very wrong. The 2.2 PSA unit should start within 5 seconds of cranking.
There can be a delay in starting once the button is pressed. This is the pre-heat period and is ECU controlled. After the pre-heat period, the engine should start within 5 seconds. If not, there's something wrong. The OP keeps saying that it turns over X number of time's. This is what is difficult to understand.

Hi, basically I mean that when the start button is pressed once, the starter motor turns about 3 to 4 times before the engine starts.
My main concern was the Average 14MPG to be honest. But from the answers it seems to be OK.

Thanks,

Ok. So the engine cranks over. Stops. Cranks over again and so on. This isn't correct. It should start first crank. If not, something is wrong.
