My wife's freelander has some bearing noise which seems to get a bit louder under deceleration (ie engine breaking, not braking).

I've dropped the props and VCU off and the noise is still there - appears to be coming from the front.

Is this likely to be a wheel bearing (I honestly cant notice it being more from one side or the other)?

What else could make this kind of rubbing noise?

Oil was changed a few days ago. It's a manual box, I've not yet attempted to check/change the gearbox or IRD oil levels.

Ta.

Thread revival: mine has a similar problem. I can't quite localise the surge of the noise. Wheel bearing or prop support bearing??

Any thoughts on how I can work out what the cause is likely to be?

I should also change the IRD oil too - which is on my adgenda.... :)

How are the tyres?
The Freelander is known to sawtooth the tyres. This results in noise, very similar to bearing noise. So check the tyres for sawtoothing first;)
Otherwise change the oil in a IRD as it's under huge stress. It's supposed to be changed every few years with full synthetic only.

It has nasty Chinese tyres on it at the moment, and I did wonder if it could be tyre noise too (there is occasionally a characteristic "warble") but the MoT centre also suggested bearing noise, hence the question.

Perhaps a good excuse to get those Geolanders that you've "persuaded" me to buy! Lol ;)

Geolander AT-S are quite noisy anyway, so they'll drown out bearing noise:p

Swap your current tyres, side to side and see if the noise goes. If so, there's your answer.;)

Or turn the stereo up louder? Lol ;)

Good suggestion re swapping tyres side to side. They're not directional, so that's easy :)
