Changing to Later spec front brakes ? - what is needed exactly ?

Hi all.
I am fitting the later servo and MC to my FL1 L series. I wasn't particularly bothered about the larger discs / calipers etc due to fitting issues with 15" rims.. however.. am contemplating fitting 16" rims which then makes the change over a lot more practical.
What exactly do you need to change over for the conversion ? - I presume the complete hub assembly... ?
What about the drive shafts etc ?
Also, - do the early abs passive sensors fit the active sensor fitting in the hub ?

Any gotcha's ?

Only interested in fronts - rears are fine.

The Hub assemblies look very different for early and MY01+ cars. So I doubt the later disks and caliper carriers from the MY01+ car would just bolt on.

I don't know what the difference between Active & Passive is, but Rave says.....

Up to 2001 MY, this consists of a TEVES Mk 20 ABS modulator and passive ABS sensors. From 2002 MY onwards, a TEVES Mk 25 ABS modulator and active ABS sensors are installed.

So, if Wabco is passive, the Teves Mk20 setup is more likely to be compatible with it.

Thanks for that - I would tend to agree that the hub looks rather different. It would be 'nice' if one could swap calipers and disks only but that would be too easy.:confused:
Regarding the Passive / active - the only difference is that the passive units are varying reluctance units that do not receive a supply - two wires only - they produce a minute signal level at slow speeds and both amplitude and frequency increase as speeds increase - a lot of processing and signal conditioning is used at the ecu end.
Active units are supplied with 3 wires, a supply - ground and a signal out. This signal is a nice square wave of constant amplitude that only varies in frequency. Much neater.

I am more referring to the 'hole' in the hub assembly where the sensor locates. I am almost certain it is the same on both the early and later units (the hole size) including the passive and actives on the differing teves units.
I would presume that the early units - being passive - are probably the same sensors as the teves passive. I will peruse the part numbers.
I am aware of people fitting the later disks / calipers etc from various mentions in posts here so I am reasonably certain the sensor will fit - even if it does not, then, as you say, the teves passive will work (or certainly should) with the Wabco ABS.

It is looking like the drive shafts are different also - (on the part numbers) :( - I wonder in what areas and IF the early ones can be used as mine are recently new.
 
To be honest. I can't see why the discs and whole caliper can't be fitted. The spigot bore is the same. The stud patern is the same. Hell even the pistons in the calipers are the same. The only difference could be the disc bell dimensions which are easily checked, and the caliper mounting lugs need to be checked. Otherwise I would think it's a simple bolt on job ;)

Ok. I've just checked some dimensions and confirmed my initial suspicions.
The front hubs are the same for all years of Freelander, so the discs will fit the hubs, no problem. There's no need to mess with drive shafts, abs or anything more complex than just the discs and calipers.
The only slight difference is the bell dimensions. The vented disc sits slightly closer to the strut in its fitted position.
However I suspect that the caliper carrier is made to accommodate this.
Otherwise it looks like a remove old, fit new parts job ;)

I can get calipers and disks no problem. I was concerned about the extra weight and cost of shipping a whole set of effin' hubs and shafts. !

The only issue 'may' be that the hubs 'appear' to have changed in 2002 (from 2Axxxxxx) Rimmers show a different part for the shafts and hub from the 2002 vin 2A .....
What year is the hub you were checking Nodge ?

Also checked Microcat and it agrees on exact same PN up to start 2002 (2A) - then appear to change for hubs and shafts ?

Just 'cos LR changed a part number doesnt mean it wont fit...
What say you ?

The the wheel bearings changed after 2002 because the ABS reluctor ring was integrated into the wheel bearing and so removed from the drive shaft. However the drive shafts are dimensionally identical and interchangeable. The only difference is the later outer CV doesn't have the reluctor ring fitted.
The hubs, as far as I can tell were the same right through the production run.
I suspect that the upright is drilled in a different place for the different ABS sensor, but that won't affect the caliper mount.

I meant new discs (used calipers though). I would never fit used discs and also the new price is so ridiculously low.
On the last discs - which have have only been on for less than a year, I used Rimmer aftermarket cheapo. (less than 15 quid each) and must confess they are excellent.
The only difference I would make this time is to get rimmer to send the discs to my breaker mate and then he can send them - far cheaper postage ;)
I am not a fan of drilled discs at all I must confess. Some of the grooved ones can be ok but tbh for my use the boggo plain ones are great.
I agree with the pricing though - how they do them for that price ? - I wouldn't be surprised if they are the cheap aftermarket ones slapped on a CNC:cool: - still good value though.
