Hi ive been having an issue with my freelander td4. It runs fine usual but every now and again it wont start. It turns over but doesnt seem to want to fire up. Ive changed the fuel filter but the today my partner went out today was all fine until came back and pulled up. The engine was spluttering and the revs spluttered to me it seems to be very low when on tickover all the time. Ive since been out and it started first time but needed a few revs to stop it spluttering. Any ideas what the issue could be ?

Thanks. Craig wilson

Any stored fault codes Craig? A 2004 TD4 is EOBD compatible, so a cheapie eBay reader should be able to down load this for you :)

Im taking it to a local mechanic friend today he's going to check for fault codes so might shed a little light on the problem. The reader might be useful to have though

Could be one of a few things.
Failing injector is my first thought.
Camshaft sensor on its way out.
High pressure fuel pump, possibly.
Or the injector loom.

Get the codes read. See if this highlights anything.

One thing to be aware of is freelanders need a code reader that doesn't just do obd2. Bosch abs and various other bits don't show up on a standard reader.
Plenty of threads on here about code readers. Have a search.

Yup, the cheapie readers will only do the engine codes :)

Which reader is recommended for Freelanders by the way? It would be good to get one for my Hippo - my reader can't read the Teeves ABS system (ABS, TC, HDC)?

A generic OBD2 reader will only read codes that will effect emissions output. So if there's a code logged for a failing coolant sensor or some other minor sensor. A standard OBD2 might not actually flag it up, because the ECU will simply substitute a value that keeps the emissions down.
OBD2 is only there to keep the tree huggers happy, nothing more.

Hi Rob, the icarsoft 930 is apparently very good, and relatively cheap (about 80 - 90 quid) but cannot perform any actuator tests.
Better is the Lynx unit which can do all actuator tests as well. Essential for abs issues and any engine actuator / feedback circuit issues. The lynx is around 250 quid with a freelander 1 license (not vin locked - covers ALL freelander 1 models). There is a brick like module that connects to the vehicle and then a USB lead to a laptop. The program runs on windows and allows up to 8 live data streams at once on screen. Also has full logging and record functions. I also like the ABS purge when bleeding brakes and also the one man operation for bleeding that uses the abs pump - does it all for you. All you need to is open the appropriate bleed nipple as instructed with your bit of tube and coffee jar hooked up :)
I use it on my L series and it is excellent ! - on the later models it would be marvellous. (price around 250 inc vat and license)
Also there is the Hawkeye which again can perform actuator tests but is a handheld small unit with small screen. Trying to look at multiple data stream is just not practical or possible. Also, it is ridiculously expensive at around 275 quid)
So, if you want actuator testing, then it is the Lynx really IMO. if you can live without the actuator tests then the icarsoft has good feedback.

You know, that is very tempting! We were thinking of heading in that direction for the autumn half-term... :)
