it'll depend on where you live for the weather to be that detrimental to driving ... you can always take it off again in the summer !!

In case you don't know, yours will have the PTC electric heater instead of the FBH. As long as the temp setting is past 12 O'clock and the fan is on it'll be active. If you have the car idling, fan on 1 and the temp setting to cold, then turn the temp slowly up you should hear the idle drop and a slight click as the PTC turns on. If not, check fuses and relays.

My wife used to make the mistake of leaving the fan off until the engine was warm, not realising about the heater.

It's almost like a secret device - it's a shame as if you don't know about it you won't get the benefit of it. If it were fitted to a Defender there'd be an ally plaque riveted to the dash telling you all about it.

Not as far as I know - I think it's just switched by the heater control knobs, but I assume it's deactivated when the engine comes to temp.

I have also found that the unit is made by Catem, and puts out 900W @12V, according to RAVE.

Unless my physics has deserted me, given that P=IV hence I=P/V, the current drawn should be 900/12=75 amps. This seems a hell of a lot.

Edit: This would be initial current draw, which would then decrease as the heater warms up. No wonder the idle drops when it kicks in.
Edit 2: I shouldn't post till I've had time to think. Once the coolant has warmed the matrix, the element's PTC characteristic will presumably limit the current drawn, and so power output, automatically, which explains the lack of coolant temp sensor input to the control setup.

if you are doing the inline conversion then you still need to take the original one out as it might seize closed at some point.

Get a bluetooth obd2 reader and app on your phone, and find out what temperature your engine is running at. The stat should open at 88 degrees, about 5 miles, 10 minutes, on both mine.
Have changed stats and water pumps on td4's, not hard at all, just takes about 3 hours.

This will be going into my top hose over the next few days once I have shaken off the MF, the original thermostat stays put as they fail open not closed, that is the reason they are failing as they open to soon and then tend to stick like that,

I checked the PTC and it is activating. The revs certainly do drop when you turn the position to 1 oclock. So thats all working.

... But there are three elements, so it may be worth at least a continuity check as per the info above.
