Afternoon All

I have a 200tdi Disco1, recently it has been sounding / running a bit 'fluffy' when first started in the morning but clears after a few seconds, I have a few jobs to do as part of the cambelt service & as I have a 'spare' set of injectors from a Defender 200tdi motor I am considering fitting these (I am presuming that they are original Defender)
I have changed filters, am looking into new fuel-line from tank to lift-pump, also maybe a 'Facet' pump as an electric 'back-up' lift-pump?

my query is...

Discovery is listed as having a slightly greater power output to Defender with the 200 motor, is this pump &/or injectors?o_O

Anyone know?

thanks in (hopefully) advance :)

Rich.

Apparently there are no stupid questions, so have you tried cleaning them using one of those fuel additive cleaners?

same injector etc8412 for both def and disco

Thankyou :)

It's cam I believe?

Thankyou :)

cams the same etc7128 for def and disco, also fitted to 2.5 petrol and diesels

And again, Thankyou :)

not stupid, as it happens I used one (redex) a few weeks ago, maybe 2 months

The difference in price comes from the turbo position and thus the exhaust positions

Ah-Ha!

o_O as I've got a few spare turbo's, 1 from a 200 Defender, 1 from a 200 Discovery & another from a 300 Discovery does that mean I've got all bases covered? :p

Okey, how about the injection-pumps, are they diferent or set-up diferently?

or are Defenders just lower powered to save drivers killing themselves :p

Rich.

The defender 300tdi and discovery 300tdi have the exact same power output.

A defender has a high turbo on the 200tdi engine as the low mounted discovery one would hit the chassis.

This position effects exhaust gas flow and gives slightly less horsepower.

Injector pump on the 200's are the same. 300's I think are the same or atleast useable.

Turbos are the same on all

I might do some a-changin then

& if it don't make any difference.........

I'll change summint else :p:D

Progress report admittedly somewhat late:oops:

So '91 disco 200tdi has had a new tank-sender thinggy but the sedimentor was removed from the fuel line to the engine:rolleyes:, the pipe unions on the tank-sender were sorta loose and it turns out that the sedimentor bypass was allowing air into the fuel system
So, eventually, I replaced the fuel line with that clear / braided fuel hose (OK. I know it's not the best but it's temp to prove the system) and plumbed an old facet 'silver-top' pump in place of the lr fitted engine item - no air in lines

Also, I had bought a kit of timing tools from egay, also in the box was a crank-pulley-puller that doubled up as an ip pulley clamp allowing ip removal and replacement
So lasteek I ate some 'brave-pills' & went at changing the ip for the spare 'defender' item........

Agee hours later it was done, timing correct
It started
But needed full throttle to 'rich-over' :(
After some faffing I decided that the pump was 'dry' of fuel so undid the top / return banjo bolt and with facet's assistance the air was purged and all was well:cool:

An improvement but not what I hoped for

So tappet clearances and injectors change next :D

Another minor improvement

So in conclusion,

1, it fits
2, easy to do
3, cheap timing kit on egay around £20 new

Hi, hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but you seem to have all the bits from the disco and defender engines. Do you think the defender exhaust manifold could be swapped to the discovery engine? - I don't care about the extra few HP, but it would let me use the standard defender exhaust.

Its a straight swap as the head and block are the same.
You will of course also need the inlet manifold.

If you wanted a defender 200 tdi type turbo on a discovery 200 tdi engine then it would fit but you'd need lots of bits :(

The turbo, downpipe adaptor & exhaust manifold, oil feed & return pipework, airfilter - turbo pipe, boost pipes to & from intercooler aswell as boost-enrichment / lda on inj-pump pipe, downpipe & steady bracket,
And probably re-locate the alternator / pas pump lower to miss the turbo & pipework o_O

Probably more but yes, it will fit

I don't have the defender items, just kept the head, inj-pump & injectors as spares :D

So where is the difference in power between the Def 200 and the Disco 200 then, i was always led to believe that the Disco engine chucks out slightly more power than the Def engine due to the fuel system and turbo being slightly different on the Disco engine, anyone know ?

I reckon they are/were the same and it was advertising hype so commercial didnt have as much bhp as disco car?
After all 300 is the same bhp both models, not sure on TD5 but I assume the same applies?
