Hi folks
been told to run synthetic 2 stroke oil in my diesel on my td4 is this what you guys recommend or do use mineral (recommended by a land rover specialist)

Thanks for the info the landrover chap gave me some stihl one shot not sure exactly the spec but he did say it was synthetic not sure about ash content according to him burns cleaner . Will go out later and get some low ash.

I add an aerosol capful of cheap low ash 2-stroke oil at each fill up on both my Landy and my taxi and notice that both run smoother and quieter with it in. It acts like the old Red-Ex upper cylinder lubricant.
 
I haven't used any on my 05 TD4 yet, but only 'cos it's in England and I'm not !!! I have used it on my x-type (2.0 duratorq engine) for the last 2 years and you can tell the difference - much quieter and smoother with only 50ml per tank.

I usually use 50ml of Millers in one tank (without 2 stroke) to keep things clean then 50ml of 2 stroke oil (without Millers) for the next 3 or 4 fills. I use an old millers bottle for measuring the 2 stroke oil.

I buy the cheap low ash 2 stroke oil from B&Q and it's fine. The x-type forum guys also specify low ash and not synthetic or other stuff and the jag runs beautifully on the 3/1 oil/millers combo.

Also, I use good diesel (Shell nitro or BP ultimate, I've never rated the Esso or Texaco fuel as good for diesel, but they are good for petrol). I used to work in the petroleum additive industry so I know this stuff makes a difference. Using good diesel you don't really need the Millers as the cleaners etc are already in the fuel (but they are not in supermarket fuel, or most diesel sold on the continent), but every 4th or 5th tankful helps get rid of any extra deposits from adding the 2 stroke.

The benefits of the 2 stroke are that it helps keep the expensive high pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated, but the downside is (very slightly) extra carbon deposits which good fuel and occassional Millers combo help to get rid of.

If your car is high mileage and you suspect it's been used on cheap diesel then it may pay to use Millers or injector cleaner as well as the 2 stroke to each tank for a thousand miles or so to clean it up - coupled with an EGR blank/bypass. Alternatively, get it terracleaned - but this can expose hidden problems (leaks etc) which are blocked by carbon. If you want to go the terraclean route do some research as there are votes for and against. I'd suggest looking at the x-type forum as there's lots of discussions there (you may need to register).

If you want to see the difference, run your FL on 2 tanks of cheap supermarket fuel to clean out any additives, then fill up with Shell Nitro and add 50 to 100ml of low ash 2 stroke (put it in before you fill up to get a good mix). You'll notice the difference in engine noise and smoothness within 50 miles.

Everybody I know uses 2 stroke in the tank where I am even with branded fuel.
though with the micro filters on all garage diesel pumps here supermarket aint that different.

Hi Freddie,

The micro filters will only take out particulate matter which will extend the life of your fuel filter. Millers or branded fuels contain additives which are disolved into the fuel and will get into the engine, enhancing combustion and preventing carbon build up from the burning process, and 2 stroke oil adds lubrication which has slowly decreased in some fuels over the years as refining processes become more efficient.

rekon i'm still going to use it .. now using the above castrol stuff and will stick with it ..
( used a few types of 2-stroke )
aint even a hint of diesel knock/tinkle at low rpm when adding go-pedal ..
( as there once used to be a tad with 'regular' diesel fuel ) .. smoother burn got to be easier on the various engine piston/crank bearings .. mpg remains good as well .. as is the power delivery ..

Wow read the study with interest is Sasol an oil company? One thging I do know is that I have used 2stroke in the cars for over three years to no ill effect.
My old boat that I run on gasoil b ( Spanish version red diesel) had loads of problems with injectors since I have been adding 2stroke no problems.
 
I used to add it to my Freelander 2001 TD4 until the fuel burning heater started flaming out.
It took 3 or 4 tanks of Diesel without any additives to get it working properly again.
Coincidence ?
 
I use 300ml of Halfords Low Ash mineral oil a tank full in my L Series and it runs quieter and picks up better, no benefit in MPG tho. I had heard that putting it in the TD4 can affect the MAF sensor... Probably someone a bit more technical on here can either correct me or confirm. Just my two pence worth!!
 
Not had time to read all that but will do so tonight. Looks very interesting and although I have always said 2 stroke oil is good in an engine I don't think I can argue against real experts with lots of money to throw at research.
 
I used to use it till I came across Diesel Rhino. Since then I stopped using 2-stroke oil.

Diesel Rhino seemed to be much better and did all sorts of other things as well as making the engine smoother.

I highly recommend Diesel Rhino if you drive a vehicle with a diesel infernal combustion engine:cool:

I gave up and cut my fuel bill by 90% by going 100% electric!
