hi there my viscous fan has had it and needs to be changed but can not get the nut to move.someone as had a go at it in the past and destroyed the nut (hammer and srewdriver).can i remove the water pump with the viscous still attached?

I tried with a 4,4 v8 range and struggled too get the pump out from around it don't know if the disco is as tight I ended up warming the nut up and managed too crack it off that way good luck

i have or had a 32mm viscous spanner managed to damage it(took some skin off my knuckles) and break 2 screw drivers.

Last week I tried unsuccessfully to remove the Viscous fan on my P38 project
Had a look at the special tool that Land Rover sell to lock the pulley.
Made one from a couple of bits of flat bar, removed 2 bolts from the pulley and fitted to tool to the pulley, held it tight and used the 36mm spammer to undo the fan nut easily.
I have in the past managed to remove the nut on my TD5 without the tool but on the P38 it wasn't going anywhere.

Tool cost nil to make as I had the metal lying around, only faff is getting to bolts back on with the tool in place especially if you have fat fingers

This was the only way I could get enough pressure on the spanner to get mine off. I had to file the nut to get the spanner on as the nut had been hacked previously.

I needed someone to hold the adjustable spanner against the tensioner while I pushed like hell.

I'd kept the old serpentine belt in the door pocket last time I changed it which was lucky as it would never have gone back on!

ok that sounds hopefull.but i think the nut has just about had it not many flats left as who or whatever hit it for days has removed alot of the flats its more round than nut shaped.i work nights and got to go to bed any other idears wellcome but think its going to have to come of with the waterpump.night night

if you hit the center of each flat with a large flat ended punch in turn, eventually nut will be stretched enough to unscrew by hand , you will need to go round and hit each one a few times but it will work in the end

'Here's my special tool' - cost Nil

Two bits of metal, one a bracket off an old washing machine, one, part of a shed hinge, both with an 8mm hole drilled near the end.

For easy of photos - I have removed the fan!

Remove one bolt from the pulley and fit one of the metal parts

Remove another bolt and fit the other metal bar

Bring the parts together and insert another bolt to join both pieces of metal.
Hold tight, insert 36mm spanner or whatever size you need and undo bolt, no need for hitting with screwdrivers, chisels etc.
The P38 one came off easily.

Job done
