I read somewhere on one of the many EGR threads about cleaning the crud out of the inside of your intercooler after doing the EGR blank.

Has anyone done this or recomend what to use as the solvent to soak it in and clean it?

Is it worth the bother?

It's well worth the bother, I used neat petrol to flush mine through. you'll be suprised how much crap you get out of it!! If you have access to an air line use this to blow through to help it dry out, doesn't take long anyway as the remaining petrol will evaporate anyway. It must be dry before you put it all back together!!!
 
Thanks for that, I'm thinking about a stage1 tune, so I want to maximise my investment. I got an air line so drying it out is no probs.

I haven't even lifted the bonnet to have a look yet or glanced at the rave cd's, what sort of a job is it to get at the intercooler... an hour or two?
 
What you driving? Took a couple hours start to finish on my td5, had to take the headlights, grill plastics from around the top of radiator off to get at everything. Not to much hassle though!!! Just put twisted performance turbo pipes and a britpart centre box replacement pipe on mine and what a difference, much lower revs at a higher road speed, Can cruise at 80mph now at the same revs as 70mph used to be!!!
 
Oh yeah, much more responsive. The rubber on the original can expand upto three times it's normal size when under pressure resulting in the turbo taking longer to build up it's boost. since I've changed mine there is a recognisable difference!!! All the best with your mods!

I cleaned the inter cooler last year on our 120k 300tdi (whilst binning the EGR) for nothing as it was clean as a whistle,top hose & inlet manifold were full of ****e though!!
 
I think the egr injects the exhaust after the intercooler anyway so how would the gunk get into your intercooler anyway as its the wrong side of the EGR to get any crud?

How did these mods reduce engine revs, or am I having a blonde moment and missed something?
 
but surely the top gear locks up and it shouldnt change engine revs for such a high speed

My disco is a manual and I don't know why it runs at lower revs but it is, and cruising on the motorway is a joy now as it doesn't seem like it needs an extra gear anymore!!!
 
without seeing proof, my reaction is that yu are deluding yoself - on a manual system the engine is physically coupled to the wheels, and there is a direct ratio of engine revs to road speed - the engine mite be quieter, but cannot alter the engine revs per wheel revolution in any particular gear.

I'm no scientist or boffin, but if the engine is running more efficiently due to having cleaned the intercooler, it will produce more power for a given rev range, therefor you will go faster at the same revs, please correct me if i'm wrong
