ODE TO MY P38.....

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"Oh no, oh no not me,
I did it my way".

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

Yes, it was my way.

Real fun starts at around 4:04 into the video!!

OK, so after doing the front cover to try and cure the low oil pressure problem...I decided to check the pressure with a gauge for curiosity and also one of our Hydraulic Engineers, Jason, wanted to see the results.

It starts off OK....odd that is pulses from 1barg to 2barg at idle which Jason found interesting, and when revved to 2.5k the reading goes to 3.5/4barg which is what it is supposed to do...then back to idle....

once the engine got warmer, we noticed it was burning a bit of oil.....give it some beans and it turns into a james bond car!!!!

Then, when left to go back to idle, the thing sounds like a tractor and the pressure drops to 1/3rd barg........and sounds like a bad tractor....

Waited for the car to cool, then did it again....no blue smoke until she gets warm...

We have two main theories....the new pump is so good, it is dragging all the sump contents up and pumping it straight to the rocker covers where it is finding its way down the valve guides into the bore....or the piston rings are dead!!

Gonna run the engine again tomorrow and check the dipstick level when revving and smoking to see if the sump is being drained hence the lack of oil pressure!

So, as the lyrics say....I could be facing the final curtain...and gotta decide what can be or should be done!

prob the oilways are semi blocked restricting oil return to sump,if its not the case ant id be filing for a divorce :(

Well another update:

Just been out to the motor...checked the oil level at stand still, level is a tad over the full mark by 5mm or so.

Started her up, took 5-7 seconds for the lamp to go out and the rattles to stop...then checked level again, now at the full mark.

Gave it a few beans...no smoke, just white fluffy condense as normal on a cold start on a damp coldish day...checked level, no change.

Took filler cap off, revs dipped a bit, no smoke from the filler hole....gave it some beans, no smoke from the filler and no splashes of oil, but then again, there is a splash guard in there.

Gave it some more beans and held at around 4k rpm, checked oil level, a 2-3mm below the full level.

Gave it a few pedal prods, no major smoke out the back...

Left her to warm up some more, no oil light at idle at all for the 8 minutes or so as the temp went up to normal. Gave her some beans and she smoked a bit on heavy acceleration, left to idle, then gradually built up the revs, no smoke at all.

Gave it a boot full and there is a bit of smoke, but not as bad as yesterday.

Took her out for a drive, auto box in first and gave it a bootfull down the road...a puff of smoke on acceleration and then only a few puffs when getting close to the rev limit...off accelerator and left to decelerate naturally from speed, no smoke on the overrun...so maybe valve stem guides and seals are OK.

Did this round journey a few times over a 15 minute period, stopping at traffic lights, no lamp on....booting it, not much smoke, only on initial acceleration and at the top end.

Then back to the yard at work, and left her idling for 10 minutes, no lamp at all.....gave it a few beans...a bit of smoke not much to write home about!

She does have a tick that is quite pronounced, but that goes when above 1100rpm.

Then whilst at idle, I did a CO2 test on the coolant to rule out a HG issue, and that turned up negative, the temp stays rock steady in the centre, although she does like to drink a bit of water...but I can put that down to weeping O rings as the carpet is a tad damp at times, and the windows mist up occasionally!!

So, kind of at a loss as to what to do next....do I just run her until something obvious happens, as she is strong as an Ox and pulls strong and revs very well....

Hmmmmmm......trouble is we have the Fiat and the L322, if I get rid of this, she is only worth a few sheckles and not enough for me to get another one with - or another car for that matter.

We still owe on HP for the Fiat so that stays for now, plus it is nice to have a spare car for just such occasions...and the L322 will be needing a bit of work in the very very near future....

What would you do>?

Have an puzzle for you Ant. Rearrange these letters into a well know phrase or saying. K,F,I,T',D,S,U,E,C.

Sounds like you'll have to keep running it - but stick to the bus routes ;)
I'm not sure about this, but could yesterdays smoke just a result of having it all to bits? And maybe it has cleared now? That pressure drop is a worry tho' ...
(Hope Wammers is wrong - for once!)

Smoke is excessive oil from worn rockers being sucked down the valve stems maybe he should reconsider sending the rockers back if he wants to take a chance. May keep it going for a while but the writing is on the wall.

Thanks for the info chaps....

Spoken with the girlfriend about it all....

We have concluded that at the moment the car is worth feck all, and yet still runs and doesn't seem to be too amiss, maybe the smokey issue and drop in oil pressure is a one-off (we both doubt it, but....)

Never-the-less, if I do run it and something goes pop...it will still be worth feck all,....so not lost much really.

But, we both have also said that in the mean time, something may pop up as the most likely cause....we have already decided to do the rocker shafts, just not the whole cam, followers etc...so maybe that will help...and the shafts are only a tenner each!

I will also be rigging up a dash mounted oil pressure gauge, just so I can keep an eye on things and see if I can start spotting patterns in pressure fluctuations, but this will be a few days or so to sort out!

Keep yer thinking caps on, all suggestions are welcome...even a gallon of petrol and a box of Swans!

You need shafts AND rockers Ant. The rocker shafts are the last thing to get oil. Judging by how bad the mains were the rockers and shafts should be worn a lot more than the mains were. They are pressure fed and gravity drained maybe that is where all your oil is going. Hence the smoke.

Good thinking....

I still have the Rockers, springs, pedestals, shafts, caps and washers so may just do the whole lot and not worry about the cam etc...!

That being said....we had another discussion and we are looking to change our mortgage product over and then pay off the Fiat...she did say, pay off the Fiat, and then get another L322.....VERY TEMPTED!
