Ok. I'm after you opinions on weather the 2004 face lift 1.8 I've just looked at worth the money.
It's a wagon in HSE spec in silver. It has the Harmon Kardon nav system. The stereo works but on rear speaker doesn't.
The car looks clean for a 10 year old too. There are a few scratches in the lacquer but no dents that I can see. The leather interior is unmarked.
It has 70K on the clock and drives ok.
The propshafts and VCU are present too.
It has 2 new tyres fitted to the front and 2 really good tyres on the rear. I know this is incorrect and would obviously be switched.
The clutch is slightly stiff so may well need lubricant.
On the test drive I noticed it is obviously gutless compared to my V6. It doesn't feel like the V6 on the road though. The steering is slightly heavier and not so precise. I'm putting this slight difference down to the incorrect tyre placement.
The the question is do I buy it. It feels like an honest motor to me.
It's at a small dealer and he's asking £3495 with a new mot.
I normally buy private but HSE spec Freelanders never come up. Hence going down the dealer route.

I like the K4 and KV6. Having driven the 4 pot today, I'd forgotten just how sluggish they are in comparison to the V6. However they are better on fuel and cheaper to fix.
I do all my own spanner work so labour is free.
I'm just on up on current Freelander prices, hence the question.

I personally would not buy anything with a k series engine in it.....I always see them at the side of the road with a puddle of water underneath them..and steam coming out the top

Sister had a 1.4 rover 25 it had 3 head gaskets in 70k...uncle had a 215 head gaskets went. ....

They are good when they are going, but the same old gasket overheating problems across the k series range...

1.4 had 103 bhp quite a powerfull engine....but like TMH says. ....Their ****!

They only break down at the side of the road steaming because owners can't be bothered to check the coolant weekly.
It's in the owners manual for a reason.
I'm old fashioned, doing my apprenticeship in the mid 80's. It's common sense. If you don't know you car and have complete disregard for it, then it will leave you stranded.

I agree with you, but where does the water go on a k series? You can't check it everytime you want to get in it.....it just randomly disappears...one day its there one day its not?

The price you mentioned is about what they are asking for 04s (V6) over here. "Is it worth it" question is HIGHLY individual. Most people that had them, will say "no", "run away", or something in that order. And YOU are right, they did (and still do) because people use them like an ordinary vehicle. Which they are NOT.

They NEED meticulous maintenance, and they are finicky. One can not just drive Hippo, put gas in it, and forget about the rest (and this is what 90% of the population expects from a vehicle today). And manufacturers love it. It's not in the manufacturers BEST INTEREST to produce a "trouble free car". And we talked about it before.

But "is it worth it to YOU" is the question you need to answer. With some enthusiasm, good set of tools, and not minding the stripped knuckles, ANY car can be "reliable". I've heard MANY people saying "I was constantly wrenching on it, and I got rid of it" (and that's saying for a LOT of vehicles, not just Land Rover).

I've spent WAY more on my wife's Hippo, than "it's worth". But what IS the "worth"? Resale? Investment? Dividends? To ME it's well worth it spending more than its "market value", becuse simply....it will NEVER go on the "market" again. She'll drive it to the ground, and all with the smile on her face. I'm over 4K USD in it, and the car WILL do another 100K before it goes to the boneyard. With the mileage my wife puts on it daily (about 10 miles a day), it will be a LONG time before she will "need" another vehicle.

And at the end of the day,.....if you divide 100K miles with 4K USD,......it's a CHEAP transportation. And she can do it, because I LIKE maintaining vehicles, and I enjoy the challenges, frustrations, and searching for answers on the forums like this one. I understand this is not everyone's cup of tea.

It doesn't just disappear for no reason, this is usually neglect or not knowing what your looking at.

Having said that I will think twice before taking on another k although they're easy to fix and parts are relatively cheap.

If you drive a k series on the motorway for too long it will **** its self all over the carriage way

The hippo has enough problems without adding a K series to the mix
