Hi guys

Ok i know a Manchester to angelsey run and back isn't the best run to do an mpg test but when we was 3/4 the way back we had to put some juice in and we had covered 220 miles when we put the extra juice in and fuel light on and i worked it out to 18.3 mpg which i thought was crap or am i expecting too much.

1988 defender 90 2.5TD ( defender 200TDI )

265 insa turbo special tracks

tweaked pump

5 x peeps + light fishing gear

no roof rack

no roof lights

i have since back tweaked the injection pump, pumped up the tyres as i forgot to do this when we went to angelsey so pumped them up from 25lbs to 35lbs and threatened son that i will chop his balls off if he exceeds 70mph as he was driving home so we will have to see how it is when we go to billing this Saturday, i was expecting between 25-30 mpg what do you think

i'd hope you'd be on 25-30

specials and tweaked pump wouldn't have helped, also the gauge is naff

Yeah the speedo reads 73 mph when you are doing 70 mph using a satnav so when i was driving i kept it to just over 65 mpg on the speedo but son says he never went under 75 mph on the speedo which would be close to 80 mph really:(

sorry, i meant the fuel gauge.. mines up and down all over the shop unless you are on a perfect flat. not enough baffles in the tank i think.

Any Landrover doing 70 plus is not going to do well on the mpg, some years ago tests were done on the air pressure difference on the front of a landy at 50 mph then 75 mph and it was nearly double!

If your indicated speed is out because of the wheels/tyres you have fitted then your indicated mileage covered will also be out!!!
Using the indicated mileage as a basis for your MPG will not give you a true figure.
I have a TD5 110 CSW in standard trim rarely used on any long journey but when I have and no motorway usage I have achieved 31.8 MPG (never above the speed limit but at the speed limit of the roads travelled)
The worst MPG achieved was 26.4 only short journeys during the winter months (same as previously never above the speed limit but at the speed limit of the roads travelled when traffic allows)
Average MPG over 2805 miles of mixed driving currently strands at 28.26 MPG.

Yeah i have just recently fitted a new fuel sender but think i mite drain the tank into clean containers and see how much fuel comes out against how much the fuel reads on the gauge and remove the stack pipe in the tank and try and work out how much fuel to put back in the tank to see where the stack pipe picks up from, did this on my series trucks and found out a series diesel fitted with a std 10 gallon tank actually ran on 9 gallons as there was always 1 gallon in the tank if it ran out of fuel and a series petrol truck again fitted with a std 10 gallon tank ran on 8 gallons as there was always 2 gallons left in the tank if it ever ran out of fuel so when running petrol series trucks i always fitted a diesel stack pipe to gain better mpg i know an early 90 tank is a 12 gallon tank so it would be interesting to see how this works out but will do this after billing.

i am not after mega mpg but expecting around the mid 20's mpg

Considering the speed and aerodynamics of a landy, I think it seems reasonable. If you keep to 60, with the tyres pumped up I think you'll see closer to 30. Once you get above 60mph, the aerodynamic resistance has a much larger effect.

Ikeep mine round 56tbh, just tuck in with the trucks, managed a whopping 32mpg on a trip leeds to Hastings and back towing the caravan.

no big tyres on mine tho, just 235/85 ATs spare up front and light bar thats using brim to brim measurements, and satnav distances.

Yeah true about mileage its a while since i last drove to angelsey and back and had it in my head that it would be about 300 mile round trip but only covered 220 miles before we put more fuel in but will have to find out for sure what the mileage is between home and hollyhead off my bro as he goes there quite a lot :)

Yeah i think son with his lead foot has used most of the fuel really so will give it a run to billing and back and see how it goes and go from there :)

I've just done some reasonably accurate testing in order to see if veg/diesel makes a difference....

From the fuel light coming on I zero the counter then pull over asap and pour 20l of fuel from a jerry can in till the light comes on again. This gives me an accurate reading of miles per 20l.

Based on several runs ALL the figures are +-1 mpg!!

29.5-30.5 mpg for straight diesel, 50%/50% and 80%veg/20%diesel

Mines a 300TDi though but would have thought the non turbo would be slightly better mpg.

err .. not to sound like a recently departed member...

but thats basic physics

My 110. 200tdi average is between 25 to 30mpg. On a trip in Morocco I did get 35 mpg on one run where we followed someone in our group who was having drive problems. That was fully loaded with a roof rack etc. Normal motoring around 28 mpg that involves cruising at 70 mph. Don't think I was down to your 18.3 even when driving through the sand dunes for a couple of days with a full load.

Correct I have a disco transfer box and big tyres.

In a standard honda civic 180 mile journey door to door ran many times same route on my defender only reads 150 !

i used to get 20 ish mpg once i realised how far out the miles were i add 30 miles to every tank of fuel which gives me between 26- 34 mpg dependant on how i drive !

Yes you both sound right as we did a little bit off running around whilst we was there and worked out the mileage should have been about 250 miles instead of 220 miles so 250 miles devided by 12 works out at nearly 21mpg so hopefully with the few minor adjustments that i have made and keeping to a lower speed we should get around the mid 20's so we will see how we go on when we go to billing on Saturday :)
