2006 RRSport brake pedal solid until revved

My mother and father in law have a 2006 Range Rover Sport, and recently the brakes have been described as shocking when moving at slow speeds and especially around car parks etc.

I noticed though that if you rev the engine then the pedal drops slightly and seams to have some power. I'm assuming that the vacuum pump is giving up?

I don't want to go ahead and replace it if anyone else knows any common faults or reasons this may be happening? Especially as the pump is £300.

Any knowledge and Info would be greatly appreciated.

Could it not be electric related ?

Well I know it's a mechanical vacuum pump.

And I'm sure it's not electrically controlled.

I also stuck my finger over the vacuum pipe and when revved it sucks a bit harder.

Your leaving yourself open to a lot of abuse by posting that.

Leaking pipes, leaking diaphragm in the brake cylinder vacuum assist. A vacuum pump would certainly produce more vacuum when revs increase so that may not be the problem, a small leak may be more than the pump can cope with at low revs.

There was a recall on early sports and disco for servo filling with oil, from the vacuum pump, open the bonnet and take a pic of the master cyclinder area please and I will be able to tell if the recall has been done as there is a modified pipe work. If this has been done I would say its the servo gone ive done 2 this week at work, hard brake pedal will go down after a long time, if brakes arent applied for a minute then it will be a normal pedal feeling then the next application it will be rock solid. I believe the recall was something like p071

I will get a pic tomorrow, if I sit in neutral or park and pump the pedal it goes hard. But it doesn't feel like it goes softer if left at idle. However if I rev the engine even only to approx 1500rpm it starts to go soft like it should.

Like I said in my original post (leaving myself open again) there is a vacuum from the pump. And gets better when revved. And I can't hear any leaks. There is a connected just in front of the servo which I disconnected to test the vacuum.

I'll get a pic up too see weather you think the recalls been done and also to show the connector.

Right so I've taken a pic of the servo etc and an above shot too. Apologies for the poor quality I don't have a PC so it's all phone.

The pipe that runs in front of the master cylinder is the vacuum pipe, and has a quick release coupling. As said the vacuum appears to be ok. Or at least working.

I couldn't see a one way valve in the pipe but I assumed the coupling to the servo was the valve itself. There is no loss of vacuum when the engine is turned off as far as I can tell unless you pump it out.

Is there any tests you would suggest that I can carry out to narrow it down to the faulty component?

Thanks for the pic the recall hasn't been done, the pipe work has been modified to have a one valve way in it and two pipes go to the vacuum pump and not one, I would think this recall will cure your problem you may even get a new master cyclinder if engine oil has gone that high in the servo, contact ur nearest maindealer and give them the chassis number and they will confirm if the recall is applicable, I would say it is in the chassis range as it ran from 2006 till 2008/9. And it will be of no charge to you as its a safety recall.
